CPU usage isn't too bad *without* A2DP. The real killer is RAM usage. Kagu uses about 29M of RAM with my 4Gb MP3 collection. (It has to cache a lot of images in memory to achieve any sort of speed). It's very similar to UKMP in this respect. I'm going to try to improve this, possibly before the 1.0 release, but if not, definitely after 1.0.

Keep in mind that Kagu uses pygame (like UKMP and Canola), which uses SDL, which in turn is designed for games and therefore wants to hog 100% CPU. We've added a lot of optimizations to get the CPU usage down (for example, when the screen dims or turns off, we stop refreshing the screen and therefore use much less CPU) and improve battery life, but it's still not really designed for multitasking.

*with* A2DP, CPU usage is a real issue. You really don't want to be doing anything else while playing A2DP audio as it usually causes skipping.

Yes, they clash sometimes. It's usually the other way around though. Usually WiFi will make your A2DP audio skip. But in my experience this is fairly rare. Just keep in mind that all of the usual A2DP restrictions apply.

I use a2dp with mplayer and had some issues with getting kaju to work, but i only installed it and tied for about 5 minutes up to now.

The a2dp stuff itself works amazingly well, I have a bluetooth audio adapter where i can attach a custom headset to, it works fine with the nokia provided one, even the mic works. The bt module can bind to two devices at the same time, like mobile phone and n800, I can listen to music from n800 and as soon as the phone gets a call the music stops and it rings in the headset. I can then answer the call (as said, the microphone of the headset shipped with the n800 works with the bt audio adapter) and as soon as i end the call using the button on the bt audio adapter, the music from n800 continues playing.
I tried getting this working with my previous pda, a palm tungsten 5 and miserably failed, so imagine my happyness about how well it works with the n800.

For the issues with cpu load and stopping sound I found it very helpful to apply a 'renice' on the pids of a2dpd and mplayer in combination with a nice value of -12 or -13, the rest of the system gets quite slow but at least i can enjoy the music with only very few breaks and still do something else on the device. Hooray for unix!!!

The kaju player I'll try to use as soon as I'm done reding forums posts

PS: setting the alsa device in ~/.mplayer and using kmplayer as mplayer frontend has been my solution up to now.

I noticed that too. something about the link. try this instead:
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/kagu/

And BTW, if anyone is curious, it's "Kagu", not "Kaju". Kaju is a typo.

Thanks!

I've started a new thread with "kagu" in the name instead of "kaju" to reduce confusion. Please make any new posts to this new thread:

Anybody else notice that the Kagu homepage security certificates expired like a year ago and are self signed? If you are going to self sign certificates, you might as well keep em up to date

I guess Jesse is too busy watching MythTV
