Guys... N800 noob/experienced Linux sysadmin here... You can laugh, now!

I loaded X Terminal, and tried the command 'sudo su -' which works to become root on a Mac, by the way. Better than the nonsense Mac 'gurus' would have you try.

On the N800 the command executed without complaint, but now the Home Applets 'RSS feed reader' and 'Speed Contacts' don't work. My guess is there's a path problem. I'd love to track down the problem, and fix it from the current state, but I suggest it might be more expedient to reset everything, so... Is there an online discussion of the different kinds of resets you can do, and how they affect the N800? Alternatively, does someone actually know what happened, and how to fix it?

In terms of resetting back to factory defaults, there is only one option - reflash with a firmware image.

As to what you did... no idea. It could be a PATH issue, did you change the default path for root user? It's difficult to say what you did if you're not sure yourself... have you modified the applets on the Home page in any way? Try rebooting and see if they come back.

By the way, the easiest way to become root is to install the becomeroot package (http://eko.one.pl/maemo bora user) then execute "sudo gainroot" to become root.

Just a guess, but did you maybe overwrite the /etc/sudoers file instead of appending to it? Maybe it used to include references to those other apps.

Did you try a total reboot? Or battery removal, then restart?

Looks like the only thing not behaving itself is the RSS reader. Any thoughts?

Nothing else helped, but looks like nothing else is bust. Perhaps this is a known thing?

Solved it...

At least I got it working. I had to delete all my existing RSS feeds, and start over. Pretty certain this confirms my path theory, but not sure why it happened.

More if I get it.
