this is how it looks if we just use the pr1.1 keybord layout.
may be there are some missing theme/gtk rc settitngs for
the sliding key. someone has a himrc file from pr1.1?

/usr/share/hildon-input-method/himrc definitely misses osso-im-fkb-slide-key. Though you can try and change that to hildon-im-button, here:

My thoughts exactly - enabling vk by sensor is not needed. One must deal with slighty less functionality in portrait mode, and slide open to have search option etc.
Proper portrait vk is VERY needed for CSSU to become more consistent and usable. Absolutely. I`m very happy about progress in this matter. But vk randomly popping out on screen (and it WILL happen, when proximity sensor will be used to invoking it) is the least thing we need, really.

Is support for custom "user made" layouts possible?

I can downgrade my n900 to PR1.1 and take out that file for You if needed.

Biggest pain in the arse for me about the N900 is the missing numeric row on the hw keyboard.

Combination of HW keyboard and wee VKB with the numeric row in landscape would be big dug's danglies.

While I understand your concerns, there are situations when opening HW kbd is just not possible - imagine you want to search for a song in O/MP while driving (don't tell me it is a bad idea to look at the device instead of the road, I know it )

Well, I`m seeing it as a inconvenient and awkward functionality (no offence intended). It`s like some hackish approach, not a customer ready UI feature (for example what about invoking vk in apps where vk is not working? what about phone calls? make blacklist, whitelist, many additional "IF`s" in code?). I know for sure, that I will be frequently closing off not needed vk from screen -> worsening my user experience.

But that`s only my opinion - if You are going to implement it, please make it optional (even via gconf).

Also, please consider bringing back gestures, swipe left to delete, swipe right to instert space, and swipe up for capital letter as was implemented in PR1.0 and older maemo devices.
