Default operator-name-cbs-widget is now complete, testers wanted

I have just uploaded the "complete" and ready-for-testing version of operator-name-cbs-widget.
What is operator-name-cbs-widget? Its a replacement for the operator name display on the desktop except that it will also display any cell tower name that gets sent over Cell Broadcast SMS on channel 50. If your network does not display these names (it seems to be mostly 2G networks that do it not 3G networks) it will just display the operator name.

The file users need is http://www.cncmods.net/files/operato..._0.1_armel.deb
Those who want to play with the source code will want to look at http://www.cncmods.net/files/operato...widget-0.1.zip http://www.cncmods.net/files/libconn..._0.1_armel.deb and http://www.cncmods.net/files/libconnui-dev-0.1.zip
The operator-name-cbs-widget_0.1_armel.deb file can be installed via dpkg -i and will remove cleanly with dpkg -r (restoring your system to the default state)

In addition to the widget, there is a control panel that lets you enable/disable cell broadcast display as well as enabling/disabling 2 different log files. The log options are probably only of use to people who understand the source code and what its doing. All 3 options default to off.

Installation threw up an error: "cp: can't stat '/usr/lib/libsms.0.0.0.divert': No such file or directory".

Installed, rebooted and ticked Cell Broadcast Enabled. Changed reception to 2G. The operator name display displays the, well, operator name.

Edit: Additionally now the widget appears in HAM's Updates section. HAM states it to be "Broken but updateable". :P

Does not suprise me. The installation does some renaming which fails with me (maybe a mixup of a divert/distrib extention?) It involves a libsms library, so could influence SMS traffic.

Maybe this might be a quick solution for you in xterm:
Code:
root
cp /usr/lib/libsms.so.0.0.0.distrib /usr/lib/libsms.so.0.0.0
till this issue gets solved

I am not the same guy who wrote "custom operator name widget"

On my phone dpkg-divert created a file libsms.so.0.0.divert which is why my scripting copied that file.
I have changed the packaging so it does things differently, it should now no longer cause any problems. (it now copies the libsms.so.0.0.0 file before it diverts it)
Anyone who installed it and got errors should uninstall it (with dpkg -r). If it wont uninstall because it cant find libsms.so.0.0.0, make that file (using the command line in the above post or otherwise) then uninstall it and it will uninstall cleanly. Then you can download the new .deb file I just uploaded (same URL as before) and install it and it should work.

Another new version is up that should fix all the problems and errors.

Be nice if you incorporated the feature of custom-name-applet into this - it allowed you to set a different text (and text color) to display instead of the actual operator name - as well as the connecting and no-network text (I don't know what the stock text was at this point, Imve been using the custom operator name applet since shortly after I first had my N900).

Actually, someone should test if the two can coexist. (Depends on how custom-operator-name-applet/widget changed the strings. Unlikely, but maybe worth a shot.)

where are these logfiles located?

can we note the cell tower ID's?

can we have the chance of noting down rogue ID's as recently stated by vi_
