Sorry for the dumb question but can Claws poll for new messages without having the entire app running in the background like Modesty can do?

Looks like it doesn't. The closest thing apparently is through invocation from term.

But this still launches the whole thing. There's an --exit switch but I don't know how to make it launch when claws is finished checking mail.
Then there's the issue of getting it to play notifications properly. Mine doesn't play a sound even when I explicitly tell it to do so (notification plugin).

Well the problem with claws mail is the required gtk+ 2.16.6.
...And strangely it doesn't build anymore in my scratchbox giving an error "qemu: uncaught target signal 4 (Illegal instruction) - core dumped"
I should try a fresh scratchbox vm but considering a few (in)stability problems of claws mail i'm not so sure if anyone is still using it...

Since this version of claws mail is far from to be considered "stable", i would suggest you to strart trying with the one available in the repos installing it with hildon-application-manager or with: apt-get install claws-mail

Plugins in the first page of this thread are ONLY for version 3.9.0.
You can't use them with version 3.7.3.
