@jleholeho
Developer e-mail is: ahf@0x90.dk I am having the same issue as you, I think that swiping up is way more natural and easy due to position of device in hand and size of human palm.
I already sent an e-mail, but please all that want this changed - do the same.

Has anyone been able to get this app to work reliably this way?
Or perhaps there's a manual hack/tweak to get the same effect?

Ah Swipe Manager; if I remember correctly, it doesn't work well on pr1.3 and I don't think the developer has updated the app any further...<SNIP>
Edit: IIRC this app was in fact taken down from the Store too though not really certain about this, I can't find it but maybe someone else can.
Your best bet for gestures would be MyMoves though I don't think it can allow you to swipe up to close...

I think it's removed beyond pr1.2
do you have any idea on how to contact a developer of particular app in the Store?
One thing, which I immediately noticed upon the PR1.2 update was that setting swipes thru Swipe Manager app is no longer fully supported..I especially emphasize a need of the SWIPE UP TO CLOSE option as probably a lot of people here would agree with me, since swiping down as the only option to close anything may get really tricky sometimes...instead of closing it, you often hit the status bar, which is simply no good...
that's why I would definitely contact the developer of this app in order to update it, I'm just unable to find any option for this in the Store..
strange is, that every other swipe setting in the app works, only swiping up to close seems nonresponsive...
