hi fmg, i think i'm having battery drain issues after the update. i updated last night, fully charged my battery, downloaded some stuff using cutetube, stopped the download, slept and saw my battery at 0 percent.
my battery is still ok since i accidentally left my phone in the house for 3 days just this week and saw that it still has charge when i came back.
i'll charge up, reboot later, then observe again but how do i extract useful logs for my last round of battery power? thanks!

If you have syslog installed, you may check there for some crashing process. Or check in top for a runaway process. The next to try is powertop.

Though I doubt it is the update that was the reason for the drained battery.

For the record, I did not notice anything unusual after the last update.

The last update was kinda BIG to me, hildon-desktop and the app launch time got a bit faster and seems more stable than before. No abnormality here either.

had it a couple months running as my primary now...
going to reflash the former primary w/ Maemo Freemantle + Power Kernel... in 3½ yrs i have used N900 as my primary it never crashed and misbehaved that much
possibly had more crashes while using the device one way or the other (phone call , browsing, copying files, doing a ls in xterminal, trying to take pictures, whatever...) then in the 3+ yrs before
1 out of 5, honourable effort but completely unusable :|

Sorry, but I don't get how are your problems related to cssu-thumb. Would you please explain what happens, since when it started to happen and why do you think it is caused by cssu-thumb. In a more systematic manner and with less emotions. If possible.

BTW the system crashing every now-and-then with cssu-thumb is usually a symptom of incorrect kernel being flashed

well, it started after i configured my "2nd N900" with CSSU-thumb - everything else being the same (compared to the other N900) it seems logical that it is caused by CSSU(-thumb), no?

    "it" being
    • crash (phone turns OFF) in the middle of a (GSM) phone call; i use a corded head-set thus didn't "touch the power button by accident" or whatever
    • opening the camera slider to make a picture, some time nothing (seems to) happen(s) and... crashed
    • crash while browsing w/ microb a (non-mobile) web site ( www.accuweather.com )
    • crash without apparent reason (phone is on the desk next to me (with screen in powersave mode), suddenlythe NOKIA logo / 5 dots appear
    • and so on, and so forth

this (the 2nd) device is in fact my 1st N900 that i used as primary for over a year before switching it to "test device" (with normal CSSU) and using a newly bought & freshly configured N900 (Pwr krnl only, otherwise no "tunning" or whatever
to setup CSSU-thumb i made (re-)flashed the N900 and followed the wiki instruction.

i followed the instruction in the wiki with the latest kernel a couple months ago
kernel version is 1:2.6.28-10power52 not upgraded since i believe

during the whole 1+ year i used that device as my primary i never had that much crashes and even those were limited to "exceptional circumstances" (too many apps open or so) not in the middle of a GSM call when hardly anything else is open
and if there was anything else open it was the same apps open in the last two months
and during the time is was "dev device" i still used it (less often) to make GSM calls w/ a prepay SIM
with CSSU stable. sometimes had issues but it was mostly after extremely long calls when the device got too hot - possibly a "self-protection" ?

    @misterc,
Overly aggressive overclocking? Battery on the brink of collapse? It might just be possible that Thumb, running that little faster, combined with either or both of the two, might be pushing it just over the edge.

I don't know what you consider extremely long calls but I have used mine for calls lasting well in the excess of two hours with no heating issues. The only time my N900 got too hot was during large (read: several hours long) Modrana downloads, with the phone under the pillow.

fmg: sth like a bug report: thumb-built pango and glib fail to execute postinst in scratchbox with thumb toolchain. (qemu: Uncaught signal 11)

@misterc - did your problems start with the latest (21.2011.38-1Tmaemo8.3+thumb3) update? on which version you were before upgrading?

Do you overclock? Did you check filesystems for corruption(you can check fsck logs in /var/log/ )?

Sometimes reboots out of the blue happen if the battery has bad contact, you should extend the springs that hold the battery if it stands loose in the bay. Or (as pichlo said) it is just an aged battery.

Anyway, I will appreciate if you provide some more information. Could you install syslogd and sp-rich-core and provide coredump next time crash/reboot happens.

P.S. - with hundreds of cssu-thumb users, I really doubt there is some major bug passed unnoticed.
