so theres an n9 for sale thats stuck in local mode im wondering if i can get it out of that mode without having to send it back to a nokia service centre...is this possible?

If the N9's bootloader is working like the old symbian phones, the local mode can be disabled using tools like NSS or NSS Pro (Nemesis Service Suite).

Connect your phone using the usb cable, and start NSS, if it finds it, you can usually change the phone mode.

If the N9's bootloader works like on most other Nokia phones, you should be able to change the phone mode using NSS or NSS Pro.

Connect your phone using the USB cable, start NSS. If it identifies your phone, there should be an option to change the phone mode (choose default or standard here).

yes local mode...
im guessing white screen nokia local mode on screen with some numbers at the bottom...

probably possible by reflash.
Phoenix can also switch these modes, but that tool you cant get hold of (legally).

i do have phoenix and NSS (using since n80 days)
but i know n9 is built on a totally different platform so i was wondering if the same would work with the n9

Hmm... local is one of the modes you can set in flasher for reboot mode.
Maybe you can try something like "flasher --reboot=normal"
