Wow... 3 pages on ideas for names. Can I ask a favor?

A> Pick something soon. (Start a poll or something...)

B> While your hamsters in your mind are churning, trying to come up with a good name: Head over to the bylaws thread and give them a read, and comment on them?

We could have the best name in the world, but without solid input on the bylaws, a great name means nothing.

Well, I did reference that thread in the very 1st post, & we've been at pains to make clear that the by-laws themselves are important, not sure what the colourful post is about? O_o
Is next Monday okay? (see my post above yours) Be good to have at least a little time so that the word gets out, & that many more can have their say...

Keep it simple like.. how about "MaemoNX"?
For Maemo OS on Nokia Nxxx phones
and NX can also mean Next which is the next step for this community.

    Cannot include "maemo" (trademark)

    Quick reply...
Mistral, Chinook, Fremantle, Harmattan are winds, all over the world.
Maemo is an obscure word. Generated by password generator and human's imagination. It can be 'translated' (Google translate, phonetic transliteration) as "Mama" from Arabic, "We have" from Belarusian, "Mom" from Bulgarian, "Horse demon" from Chinese, "memo" from Gujarati and Swahili, "Memo" from Hindi and Kannada and Telugu and Urdu, "Even before" from Japanese, "Mamo" from Persian, "MEMO" from Tamil, "We" from Ukrainian. "Horse devil" (馬惡魔) is my personal favourite.
MeeGo, Mer and Nemo are touched upon, too.
MeeGo might be standing for "me on the go".
Hildon an obscure word with many meanings.
    Mer is an unknown, too.
Nemo, part of Mar, is 'nobody' in Latin.
Maa-emę, Maanemo, Manemo is Mother Earth. "Manemo", or "Maanemo", is a possible candidate: does not contain "maemo", is a synonym of "Maaemę", contains "nemo".
I have nothing against Aeolos, a name shared by three mythic characters, the ruler of the winds. But it's Greek, and no other names were derived from Greek mythology/language, were they?

Mer is for Meego Reloaded, and is the french word for "sea". Nemo is then probably for the captain (riding the sea).

My personal opinion is that Hildon is a deserved homage to the original creativity that eventually led us to the maemo that we have today:

    http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...5&postcount=27

It is not divisive or disrespectful to give a tip of the hat to where we came from.

I am not aware of these "divisions." I hope no one is making the mistake of thinking that something like the name means that the new entity will not be supportive of Qt, QML, etc.

A bit weird when people insist in taking into account the disruption in naming (maemo->meego, missing hildon names) that Nokia introduced with harmattan, while in same sentence they insist in meego actually being maemo6.

My 2 cents: While I'm absolutely happy with the name Hildon-foundation, I also think the name Aeolos-foundation in whatever spelling has a real good point in the rationale behind it. But in the end it all will be just the name of the foundation and the URL where you can read the bylaws and foundation's oragnization related stuff.
For everything else we will most likely keep domain names, hell for some domains (e.g. repositories) we even mustn't change domain names, so no reason to get yourself a headache about all that. The headache will start when Nokia refuses to edit the maemo DNS entry to point to community infra servers, and then I promise name of the foundation will be our least problem ;-)
