Nokia devices division was worth nothing with Symbian and Harmatan. In 3 years he produced the best nokia has ever done and made it worthwhile for sale. Look at BB on the other hand, whose whole value is LESS than one division at Nokia. Stop trolling.

And so on. Jolla Employees outside of Finland seem to be for some reason on their way to Ruoholahti.

Not really competing for the same market. Nexus 5 gonna cost a lot more.

And they would be annoucing shipping of pre-orders done months before anyway.

I'm reading the Jolla will be 400 euros, while the Nexus 5 16GB will be $349.

How is the Nexus costing a lot more?

ehm, different currencies, different countries etc. etc.

The $299 nexus 4 costed around €470 when launched.

Also there's another big factor. US carriers do not give you lower prices for their service if you don't get a subsidized phone. Because you still have the same monthly (AT&T|Verizon|whatever) bill for most US consumers, a $200 iPhone is actually costing them as much.

Here (Greece that is, but in quite some EU countries) you get a discount on the monthly bill equivalent to the subsidy if you don't get the phone. So for the customer a €200 iPhone really costs €600. As the carriers usually have higher prices than your average online retailer, many people get the discount and go get whatever device they like from a store, at full price.

Google in the US has to compete with subsidised phones to sell (remember the Nexus one failure?) so they subsidise the phones themselves. I do not know why they do that, maybe to make money via services like amazon, to push the android ecosystem or something else, but it's clear that if they do have any profit margin, this is nowhere near the industry average, as equivalently specced phones are much more expensive.

While it's possible to sell phones without carrier blessing in most european countries, it's nearly impossible in the US (carriers even block phones they don't sell themselves from using their network altogether), so you really need a low price if you want to directly sell a phone in the US.

All these factors, plus ~20% VAT, higher income taxes (esp. Finland), mandatory EU-wide 2yr warranty, and stricter customer protection laws drive the prices up, so comparing the US Google-subsidized nexus price with the retailer EU price of even the same product doesn't make any kind of sense.

Okay, okay, I know all that.

Still, the nexus 4 was sold UNLOCKED from the Play Store for that cheap price in select countries.

Also, we can agree that something that costs $400 in the US usually costs 400 euros in Europe (generic Asian-made gadgets).

So, I don't think they're that far apart, in fact the Nexus seems to be the cheaper option if the Play store carries it in your country. If not, probably Jolla wins.
