I'd like to see a Media OS developed for the N800 that you can choose to boot from that only runs video, music and maybe a picture viewer - Something like the archos interface, leaving all resources for playing videos and music. Will there ever be 3d/opengl drivers to make videos run/load in a timely manner and play all video codecs smoothly without having to skip frames. Until then I'll have to use my archos for videos -has tv out/in as well(I'm not comparing so don't get a hissy fit). Does the N800 only lack 3d drivers or is it the hardware that limits this from being a archos type video player as well as a slow but great linux toy/brick?

The lack of good video playback is a real killer for the N800, I tried to watch a film (divx converted using Nokia N800 Video Convert) on my new N800 yesterday on the bus home and it took about 2 minutes to load and was so jumpy it was unwatchable .

So I pulled the SD card out and put it into my GP2X which played to seamlessly…, I know the GP2X has 2 CPU’s and a better GPU but is there not anything Nokia can do to improved playback?

Also on a side note the GP2x will auto resize any video you try and play so there is no need to convert them expect for the size issue, is there anyway of port this feature over to the N800?

Unless you are willing to write a "media OS", there's not much point in putting up a poll since everyone's going to say yes. There's no reason to ask if people want more software to run on their N800s.

3D != 2D
Movies are 2D.
3D acceleration (openGL) has _nothing_ to do with watching videos.
What you want is 2D acceleration, which is a totally different problem.
The schematics were posted in this forum a few weeks ago, if you want to see what video chip these devices use.

If we're talking MediaOS, isn't this not something that might be taken into consideration?

http://www.geexbox.org/en/start.html

It'll have to be rebuilt (only x86 at the moment), but its system requirements are modest enough, as is the space it needs.

I could see it parked on a SD card with movies (of course one of those 32 GB baddies!). Then again, the way I watch my movies (in 5 minute chunks), I'd probably have little use for it.
