My Neo900 post on Hacker News on the BBC Edward Snowden interview has sparked an interesting discussion. I think it has offended a few iSheeple and Android fanboys. Feel free to participate.

It amazes me when reading that thread how many people there are who assume kind-of-godlike omnipotent powers for the 3-letter agencies

    And one 4-letter agency

That does not surprise me. Have you actually read the BBC interview? Snowden as much as fosters that notion.

Much as I appreciate the initiative, the man does not do much to improve his own credibility. I personally struggle to take him seriously.

Their stupidity isn't entirely their fault, they've just watched too many movies.

    hehehee
    Wicket ...
as a kid I bet you liked to poke bee hives with a stick...
'cause you sure stirred up some bees with that post at hacker news

    great clip too ..
of hollywood hacking vs real hacking...
all that's missing is the standardized ho-ho's, twinkies, and hot pockets

On a sad note..wah-waaah [that's my oboe sad note..]
it is apparent from every similar interaction with posting about the neo in foreign columns ...[and you mention it as well] ..that there are a lot of people who believe that they are right in their view on the neo [when they have little..[ if any ] knowledge on the device ...and stating that neo posters are completely wrong (concerning whatever-the-exact-point they think knowledgeable on)... ]

There are on the other side of the coin...of course... many who were oblivious to the neo before...and thanks to such edifications as postings in hacker news.. who are now following it with interest...

    Still...
the nay-sayers do bring me down...and bum me out.....[just a little]
like ants at a fabulous luncheon picnic in the park....
or a rain cloud on an otherwise unblemished sky..
    ah well...
    some people's children eh?

Hmm...if the 3 and 4 letter powers that be...
[frankly I can think of a few 3 and 4 letter words ]
are using this suite of "smurf" tools...[how loooowww is that to use children's saturday morning programming icons' names as methods of snooping, attack, information gathering etc..soooo lloooowww ]
anyway..if the bloody smurfs are running around causing havoc ...[I still can't believe I said that..]

then the neo900 has got to be their Gargamel

I've always been partial to Azrael....I liked that cat.

These smurf like tools are often used by major enterprises that own a private cellular network. They use these kind of technique to protect there properties or in case they need to spy on an employee. Your network provider can do much then Snowde did mentioned in that interview. The neo900 gives a user much more control over the device compared others. Turning off the modem does not necessarily hide your locations if you don't change your wlan mac address properly. I think that NSA was setup to be focused on security instead of spying on the boy/girl next door. Spying isn't something new but very old. Back at the time Adam used to spy on Eva in the holy garden. Does the Lilon cell backup battery of the N900 also supplies power to its cellular modem?

Nope, no way modem could operate a single CPU instruction or send a single sine wave of RF when powered down. And no way whatsoever for any TLA to exploit the hardware to enable power to modem when user decided modem shall be powered down. Please note that we can't take any responsibility for software you deliberately run on your device. A compromised browser is sth we can't do anything about, for example.

[edit] ooops you asked about N900. Nevertheless same applies for N900, the bupbat is too weak and anyway not connected to BB5 modem of N900. However main battery is connected directly to BB5 in N900 so it could stay active when asked to shut down. N900 has none of the advanced sandboxing and monitoring features which are unique to Neo900, regardless of the fact that modem separation being pretty good in N900, better than in 99% of contenmporary smartphones.

    Two questions:
    1) Does this affect the viability of the second batch?
    2) Does it mean that there is still a chance to get into the first batch?

2nd batch comes after first batch, this is about first batch :-) Probably the chances for a 2nd to succeed are higher after this first batch succeeded, since we already managed it two times then, basically, so 3rd time gets easier.

yes, you still could get into first batch since we still can adjust the number of items to source. However pretty please use bank wire transfer since we recently have massive problems with PP.
