how about i have no clue what i was doing when it happened, because i randomly went to check some files on it and it was dead.

So i wasnt "doing" anyting with it, this could have happened hours or days before for all i know. Unless accessing it corrupted it.

i just bought a Trandcend 8GB, hopfully i wont have any issues. If i do, Nokia will be getting a nasty email from me.

with the damaged cards do you know if they will RMA them, never tired to on removable media.

unbelieveable.

Well, i came very close to killing another hcsd card (8gb)

i was using the camera app to record some video, when i was complete i started up
canola to finish listening to my music...all of the sudden "error" switched to built in media
player, "cant find file"

i open up file manager and all my folders are there, but there are missing files within them...so ireboot device...go straight into file manager, now half my files are GONE. Fearing that i would corrupt yet another 8gb card i quickly formatted it inside the nokia. So now i have blank memory card.

Going to try to reproduce the problem tomorrow...really dont want to lose another 8 gigger. i dont THink the external mmc slot can be trusted.

That would explain why the data is corrupted - however, the cards are TOAST. Ready for the trashcan. Gone.

However, this is not N800 specific - I had a Flash Card Reader toast TWO of my (extremely overpriced) 2 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. I was never able to resurrect them, even when trying in a different reader, in a Sony Clie itself, with the Sony Ericcson Walkman phone and a ton of different software on my XP notebook.
One guess of mine would be that there can be hardware problems with the power supply of the controller thatthen causes permanent damage to the cards.

It also explains why the cards were killed.

Rather than buying new ones, can't they be replaced under warranty? My Kingstons have a lifetime warranty and will be sent back if they fail.

I have reason to believe that the problem is with the external slot only. I have an 8GB in my internal slot and has never caused any problems.

And I happen to believe it is a combination of SDHC cards and Nokia's latest firmware for the N800.

Transcend has been identified as problematic.

See bug 1636 at bugzilla.maemo.org. You might want to sign up and add your case to help the ongoing investigation.

You're sure about this bug 1636? It seem to discuss only about WiFi connectivity ... Maybe you mean bug 1204?

Adding another datapoint: I have been using the Patriot 8GB Class4 SDHC card in internal slot, filled with files up to full capacity. Since the MMC plus patch came out it has worked great without issues. (Before with a stock Nokia kernel it corrupted within a week!) I'm pretty confident that the issue IS with the Nokia stock firmware, not hardware.

I haven't tried the external slot... Only if I had two cards...
