[Brainstorm 2010] News and Planet

This thread is part of the Maemo Brainstorm 2010

What can we do to improve the news experience for casual Maemo followers?

Propose your ideas and suggestions here, let's talk about it, and summarise the best ideas and conclusions in the Brainstorm 2010/News and Planet wiki page

There are two improvements we're working on right now:
  • Better abstracts, as the current text shortening system leaves too much of the story unshown
  • Reading blog comments through Planet, with blog systems that provide comment feeds

I feel the latter is quite important as the conversation sparked by a story is often where the beef is.

I'd also like to start adding new "news item karma" sources to Social News, as nowadays delicious and technorati are not the most relevant ones around.

Glad to hear that bergie. If I include pictures at the top of my blog, often none of the abstract (or just part of it) shows up in News/Planet (see my "America Offline" story for example).

There's a widely used hack for this in blogging software - if you put

Code:

<!-- MORE -->
in your post, the summary is up to that point. Is this the convention you're using? This would also be useful for agregation purposes.

In the absence of thos you could always fall back to cutting at the end of the first
Code:

<p>
Cheers,
Dave.

We have a character limit, after which we start looking for first end-of-sentence, which may be any of:

Code:

., ?, !, </p>, </li>, </blockquote>, </div>
Adding the MORE convention there would probably make sense too.

Wordpress is doing as Dave said. Here's the exact code from one of my articles:

Code:

<!--more-->

  1. Do you really have to do an abstract at all? Why not show the item's whole RSS feed description? The item has been voted enough to be on the News page -- why not show the whole article?
  2. I'm against showing the comments. I think it should just show the number of comments the article has, and a link to comment part of the article.

FYI, the <!--more--> tag does not show in the RSS feed.

Well, how would it be implemented? Are we talking appending comments to the end of the article in full format? That I'd be against, but a little AJAX to allow you to expand and collapse the comments from the Planet or News page would be nice.

A few members are relating that the current myriad news/editorial publishing locations/efforts aren't enough. There's a request to revive Tableteer and put it under community management. Is that a possibilitity? I'd be willing to help.

I'd be willing to do what I can as well to help this initiative.
