You are right. If you want a phone just to have some apps that look nice, but are not useful at a lot of things then do not buy the N900, it is not the phone for you.
But if you want to do something...

if you want a phone with limited OS and functionality go and buy another one, but if you want the freedom to create your own apps get the n900.

Leaving all jokes aside, i love my n900. With this phone i replaced my old laptop, my remote control for the TV,DVD and even PC, my webcam, my mp3...

i am having the same problem but on WIN 7 . i see the device in my network but cannot access is .

when i try \\ip_of_phone it says: "windows cannot access \\ip "
