Re: I wanted to know if the n900 is still a good phone today

If you want a device to tinker with, then the N900 is unique (as
others have said).

If you'd like to get a phone that just works and has all the new and
snazzy features and slick interfaces to...

Re: Google Chat Phone Calls

I ran the telepathy debugger and can confirm the following:

1. If "Forward to Google Chat" is checked in Google Voice, my Gtalk account on the n900 receives a packet initiating an audio chat when...

Re: Google Chat Phone Calls

I am experiencing the same issue. The n900 detects Google Talk calls coming from Google Talk. But it does not detect Google Voice calls forwarded to Google Talk. The same behavior occurs if I log...

Re: What new apps are being developed for the N900

Android has a massively larger user base and therefore a lot more developers.

Developers have a lot of incentive to create apps for Android, whether to make money by selling their app or to draw...

Re: Thank you all the developers. N900 would be just another phone without you guys!

Agreed. A big thanks to all the developers. And a special thanks to Qole, whose easy debian opens up an "app market" (translation for the grown ups: Debian package repositories) second to none.

Re: Stale NFS file handle errors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had this problem a few days ago. In theory, the solution is to run fsck on /dev/mmcblk0p2. But the problem is fourfold: there is no way to unmount this partition while the N900 is running, there is...

Re: New transitions.ini - No transitions

Sorry to revive and old post, but you can speed things up even more (and make your N900 get right to the point without all the eye-candy nonsense) by zeroing out the zoom values as well. This solved...

Re: No text completion in microb address field

Well, I answered my own question by bricking my device. :)

A fresh install reveals that the address field in microb does not activate text completion.

Any way to customize/change this?

Re: Why so much variation in which overclocking profiles work?

Thanks for the quick reply. A follow-up question: Is there a greater danger of damaging a "poor" chip with overclocking. I.e., if the power-kernel's "ideal" profile causes crashes or reboots, should...

Why so much variation in which overclocking profiles work?

Pardon my ignorance, but while reading the many overclocking threads, including this outstanding summary (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=595582&postcount=774), it seems to me that there is a...

Re: Missing text selection toggle arrow in osso-xterm

Thanks! I suspected there must be some hidden logic behind it. Now I realize why the arrow disappears whenever I use vim. :)

Missing text selection toggle arrow in osso-xterm

On the N900, I find that osso-xterm shows the text selection toggle arrow (at the bottom of the screen, to the left of Ctrl) inconsistently. Sometimes it is there, and sometimes it is not. Usually it...

No text completion in microb address field

I know that there is no text completion/prediction when entering text via the physical keyboard in webpage forms and text boxes.

But I could have sworn that I used to get prediction when entering...

Re: N900 is not a phone ! Why people still don't get it?

Finally someone who understands... Everyone one else just laughs when I refer to my keyboard + monitor as a "typewriter with an erasable page."

Re: New to Linux - best way to learn and which distro to get?

You're right. My dislike of Gnome is purely a personal preference. I don't mean to start a flameware here. That's the beauty of Linux. You have so many options. I do almost all of my computing in...

Re: New to Linux - best way to learn and which distro to get?

+1 Puppy Linux
+1 Crunchbang

But, then, I really dislike Gnome. So these two distros are very user friendly ways to learn about alternative window managers. Puppy Linux runs JWM. Crunchbang...

Re: Why should I care about Google Chrome OS?

I would not consider it original. Netscape tried to create a browser OS back in the 90s. And the thin client model goes way back.

I think there will be some interest in Chrome OS machines as...

Re: Chrome OS on N900 ?

I'd imagine someone could hack it. My guess is it would be a nightmare even if you could get it running. And you'd likely lose much of the functionality of your N900 due to missing drivers, etc. If...

Re: Norwegian N900 review (Mobilen.no)

That review seemed pretty Microsoft-centric if you ask me. The Nokia N900 fails as a mini-computer...(drum roll) because it can't interface with old versions of Microsoft Exchange?!? The implication...

Re: The N900 Strategy and Why the iPhone is So Hard to Beat

As a Linux user, I've already resigned myself to a pocket computer landscape dominated by other OSs. The problem that Maemo and other Linux mobile OSs are up against (and no, I do not consider...

Re: observation on n900 competitiors

On the plus side, Nokia had the faith to make the N900 quite unlike the iPhone in most other regards. :)

This is pure speculation, but I'm guessing that the small screen was
due to any number of...

Re: Maemo vs Android, where do you see each going?

I think you misread my post -- I am no Android enthusiast and would prefer Maemo on my own device any day. And I'm rooting for Maemo.

But I am not a fan of Symbian. And, right now, Nokia still...

Re: Maemo vs Android, where do you see each going?

This assumes that mobile computing is a zero sum game--i.e., that one OS can only survive by "killing" all the other OSs. But look at the desktop PC environment during the 90s and early 2000s. Even...

Re: Is Nokia making life difficult for the N900 with so many delays?

I've changed my tune on this. I originally was frustrated by the delays, fearing that they would hurt the n900. But now I realize that a buggy device would do far more harm to the long-term prospects...

Re: N900 vs. Motorola Droid (Verizon Android device)

I wonder if your arguments about Maemo vs. Symbian also perhaps apply to Android and the iPhoneOS. I know that Android has a lot of room for growth and development, but I can't help feeling that the...
