I use conky via livewallpaper to display the time on my desktop, and therefore I can see it when I'm in the task switcher. It should be fairly easy to get battery state info the same way.

So I'm not a python guy, but just a couple minutes on google turned up the strftime method. it seems like something like:
text = self.time.strftime("%X")
would be simpler than the brute force...

The color picker wasn't behaving correctly for me.
Changing line 47 of clocks.py to divide by 255 worked for me:
self.context.set_source_rgb(self.color_r/255.0, self.color_g/255.0,...
