The most flexible solution would be using the SS from the MMI or shortcuts. But this is unlikely to happen:

At least Nokia should run a mirror to keep the service up in those cases. Especially bad as PR1.1 was out right before they moved and many users were in update mode ....

In principle I agree, but there are also some codes which are not passed through to the network (like IMEI). The comment #42 implies that Nokia indeed distinguishes between supporting USSD and SS...

You are probably referring to https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5357 as USSD bug. Although from the comments in the "other comments" section it is clear that there is a misunderstanding of USSD...

Either file as a feature request (to do it from the N900 GUI) or do it directly from your phone MMI.
The SS you are looking for is Call forwarding on no reply "CFNRy" (61). Type ...

a workaround would be to send supplementary service data to the network to set this up. They start with # or * and are standartised. Unfortunately the N900 rejects "calling" # or *. If implemented...

As a workaround I change the APN name in the existing profile back and forth, but I hope we'll get rid of that shortcoming in the next updates ....

No, same sim, same provider. Just 2 different APN's. One is the general internet connection, the other features some web-access for controlling the subscription....
To be sure, I'm not talking WAP...
