There is an option to choose an Emoticon Theme.
Similar to how there was an option to change the emoticon theme on the n900/maemo 5.
I wonder where the hell them files are in order to sort the themes. possibly its exactly the same setup as the N900/maemo5, we just need to find where Maemo6/MeeGo stores its emoticons theme files and Voila!

Well Nokia do at least know how to build a decent phone, just apparently don't know how to support it..

I just tried to follow your instruction. But my N9 announced "permission denied". Did i do st wrong?

just copy this folder in your /home/user/ directory on your phone the folders name is: .emoticonthemecache
and your emoticons will be back
and then restart

i want to add yahoo messnger smileys on my N9.
i 've downloaded and opened skype.xml and facebook.xml from post above.
looks like both of them have a header like this :
for skype :
for FB :
looks like we can add YM smileys if we make new XML files, with editing theme_uuid and service_uuid. and of course the smileys icon and code.
does it possible? the problem is, i dont know what is theme_uuid and service_uuid. if someone can help, i am gladly to try it out.
note:
i am using telepathy-haze from this tutorial to enable my yahoo messenger.
