Current Modo reformer here... prior 3DS Max, before that Softimage (the old school one, not XSI) user... before that Power Animator (the grandpa to Maya) and 3DGig.

I'm still learning Modo, can't say that I've gotten the hang of it yet but I love it.

Character rigging in Max is indeed painful. That's the one thing I missed when I went to it from Softimage.

Solidworks is my favorite... but now the old version I have won't run on Windows 7.

The most DVD Burning Applications are able to close a session manually. This should do the job.
And the Plextor drives include, as far as I know, tools to extract data from corrupted disks (but search at google to check before you buy) Plextor Software - look at the Bottom for PleXTools Professional XL. The software is since 2 years freeware. But sadly you will need a Plextor CD writer. (expensive but worth the money)

Ah, and I prefer Blender. But more for technically drawings and interior architecture.

Well, like I said: I have yet to find a tool (or technique) that will fix these DVDs. I've tried everything-- different drives (including a Plextor external, which is what the faulty DVDs were created on), software, etc. Not one single attempt has succeeded.
