I have tried this and whilst the Xbox360 remote doesn't work for me other IR apps I have downloaded work this way on my phone. So it seems the this app not the phone IR which is not working
Can you run as normal user in xterm:
sudo irsend list "" ""

and tell me exactly what it says.

HOT TIP

If you want to test your ir port is working try this:-

1. load up xbox360 media remote application on your N900.

2. using a digital camera or a camera on another phone look at your n900's ir port through the secondary units viewfinder lcd screen and every time you press a button on the media remote application that is running on the N900 you should see a small light come from the ir port on the N900.

see A light = working ir port

no light = nokia service centre (or application not installed correctly)
Awesome trick! It definitely worked for all of my IR devices! A little reassuring to see that my N900's IR port is fine.

Now try:
sudo irsend send_once Xbox360MediaRemote Xbox360_Power

whilst pointing your N900s port towards your xbox.

In which case lircd isn't running so you need to enter:
sudo /etc/init.d/lirc start

first, then run the irsend command again.

Well, that's positive, now try:
sudo irsend send_once Xbox360MediaRemote Xbox360_Power

which tells the N900 directly, to send the power command to an Xbox 360, make sure your IR port is directly pointing at the IR sensor on the Xbox 360 (which is below the DVD tray). And good luck.
