Well the design is like the iPad, it is much thicker at 19mm and the whole concept is certainly do-able.

I, initially, designed it with the i7+5650 in mind as an Omnia device so people don't need to spend money on a tablet & netbook & notebook & desktop computer.

With the "XTREME" model specs, it is ultraportable (less than iPad but more portable than an ultraportable PC) beast.
With Win7 optimised, it can serve all your legacy, emulation and internet games and billions of Applications. But it is still powerful enough to churn out for those modern games, MW2 anyone?
And the aim of the design was to make it "convertable" into an ultraportable computer.

The specific hardware was my research to find if the aim of the tablet can be fulfilled with the current available technologies or if I had to make specific changes to my design to make it available.
Basically I'm designing something most people would find very good to own over their current devices and not a fantasy device like The xPhone!
The pricing and availability was just for fun :P

The point of this exercise is for me to create a tablet concept that is optimized to fulfill what I was aiming for (The Tablet that can displace your notebook) and for you, the interested members of this community, to review the ideas and also provide your own.

So you're gathering ideas... just to test if a product could ever be made that would satisfy the folks here?

Or... are you about to venture out and build your own form of the JooJoo?

I would go ahead and build one if I had the (entrepreneur, engineering, software) skills and the time. Clearly I don't have those expertise, but I hope this venture may be applied to/lead to a device somewhere in the future.

So yeah, its just a big brainstorm and curiosity if it would satisfy the folks here

Here is an updated sketch I made:

Why has the order of the ports changed?
To maximize functionality.

Why do the sockets contain flaps?
To protect them from trauma, splash and dirt.

Why does the battery have a flap?
The entire exterior is made of two elements; the large glass-face and the scratchproof aluminium unibody.

What is the Magic Lock?
It is a small metallic section which is compatible with the current laptop lock key and holes, however it also integrates a connection to charge the device aswell as connect it to peripherals such as the keyboard and dualscreen accessories.

SPECIFICATIONS:
TABLET XTREEM2
$1299 Jul 2011

Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel Core i7 2657M (1.6-2.7GHz Dual)
4GB DDR3 RAM
ATi HD 5650
256GB SSD
10" (1280x800) S-AMOLED
Capacitative Multitouch
Webcam, HDMI, Wifi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, Loudspeaker, Microphone, Vibration, 6-way gyro, FM-radio, DVBT, digital compass, aGPS, 3G/WiMaX

5.2h (normal use)
9.6h (normal use with extended battery)
5.7h (high-performance with extended battery)

ACCESSORIES:
Detachable Keyboard: $100

S-AMOLED Dual-screen: $250

What do you guys think?
Would you willingly pay for such a concept?
Any criticism is welcomed!

No, I won't buy it.

1: it is way too expensive.
2: runs a heavy and expensive OS.

A real cpu deserves a real distro - one with real repositories,
not just some blow-hard f@rt-app prop-store.

Intel Core i7 2657M (1.6-2.7GHz Dual)
if you can cool it, and if you can power it - good luck with that
I was considering along these lines last month but just an i3
with the integrated graphics would be adequate for portability's sake.
Any GPU you tack on will chug power and generate enough heat
(along with the CPU) to tack on an espresso maker.
(I still have visions of steamed mocha venting out from a cpu nozzle)

256GB SSD
Mandatory minimum

10" (1280x800) S-AMOLED
Capacitative Multitouch
7" is more practical unless you want to lose market share.
10inch will consume about twice as much power = batteries.
7inch, while not pocketable, is a lot more stowable.
I just bought a Samsung Tab for a pilot where the formfactor
was a primary consideration.
10inch would be too big for the killer-app uses of a real cpu in-hand.
Besides - you spec an HDMI (I would suggest DSUBvga as these are still
ubiquitous, even for the next 2-3 years) for the occasional big-screen experience.

Webcam, HDMI, Wifi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, Loudspeaker, Microphone, Vibration, 6-way gyro, FM-radio, DVBT, digital compass, aGPS, 3G/WiMaX
All these things are not particularly easy to integrate,
Don't forget USB3
Lose the FM radio - it is just extra expense.
Lose the DVBT - it is just extra expense.
Accelerometer <Vibration> if you use invensense, could be part of the gyro module.
WiMax has issues - stick with wifi -
3g you can do with gammu and Huawei stock modems.
Expect GPS and compass on the same module.

What I had in mind is a bit more like this:
in a smaller case and without extra junk like dvd/blu-ray
GIGABYTE H55N-USB3 is my current favorite for this type of build.
I have built mATX systems for years (I still have my first low-profile aircraft aluminum case
which now holds an EG45M-DS2H and a lot of empty space due to ssd and no other drives).
The new mini-itx motherboard begins to make diy slates possible.
Meego, if they get it right, would absolutely scream on such a machine.
Power would need to be something like this, as 12v batteries are anywhere.

All this is mere whimsy if Nokia delivers an 'N9' running on a Meego
that does not have a whole raft of proprietary closed-source issues.
And does not immediately toss the whole Meego idea under the train,
like they have done so often in the recent past.

(or almost whimsy - i am actually building such a beast,
but it is for replacing my current work machine which is getting abit dated,
and will function as my version of a laptop.)

Ok, so far ALL tablets based on Windows 7 / x86 are disappointments.

I got some time off today...So here is an updated model:
X-pad

-Runs on a high-end ARM processor 1.5GHz OMAP4440 (or a Tricore A15)
-Has 1GB RAM (or a higher 2GBs)
-Has 32GB NAND (or higher 128GB)
-Runs on Ice Cream Sandwich, or Windows 8 (also multiboot MeeGo, Kubuntu, ChromeOS)
-Reliable 10hours (or more) battery life with 3-cell 4,200mAh battery (user replaceable!)

Has more functions than you can peg a stick at:
-Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, Compass, Gyro, Light sensor, Front 2MP camera, microphone
-Has telephony + 3G connectivity (a cheap luxury)
-Two fullsized USB ports with Host ready from the box
-Fullsized HDMI out port for reliable video out everywhere
-An antenna port for radio and TV on the go or from antenna aerial
-Active Digitizer for accurate notetaking, digital signature, drawing via dedicated pen
-Transformer dock for better typing experience, also acts as a kick-stand
-Dualscreen option a possibility via "Magic Lock" which is a typical Laptop-locker with HID to charge the tablet and send the keystrokes/video instantly

-Weighs 550g (~1.18lb)
-230mm wide and only 9.9mms thick all-round
-Only 137mm tall so it can be grabbed with one hand
-Dual loudspeakers up front for perfect media consumption
-Ample 8.9" of screen estate
-Ultratough tampered/gorilla glass surface
-Premium metal surface for svelte design also resists scratching and fingerprints

Price: Three easy payments of your soul
Four, for the advanced model =P

I think multiple versions of this should be made
a dual or quad core Arm Cortex a9 or a15 running Ubuntu plus Linaro optimizations. Much cheaper runs Linux gets great battery life but can't windows apps.
Amd Fusion Win 7 with longer battery than Intel versions and slightly cheaper.
Also I think you should make a pocketable 7" version. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'll add them in for next round, when I get free time*.

*Not when I'm working in the morning, driving in the day, working at night, chores on saturday, shopping on sunday, church on sunday, but any other time i've got the laptop I'll definitely be hitting that*
