Precisely that, maintaining sockets. There's even a XMPP extension for this http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0198.html .

No. I meant of keeping a socket open. Most of the services in the N9 were purplelib and telepathy, thus XMPP and the like, right? I'm invariably wrong, but seeking clarification nonetheless.

XMPP is interesting,
with stuff like this:
Code:
This XEP requires no interaction with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) [16].

Can someone answer a question about Ubuntu touch?

I'm a bit late to this thread. Both my n900's died. I ordered a pandora, and likely will order a pyra.

Linux on android isn't really appealing to me since I can't really modify how the underlying android device behaves.

I was reading about the bq M10 this morning and I saw this:

"Traditional Xorg-based software runs on the tablet in a confined, secure container using Xmir."
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/02/b...u-need-to-know

Does that mean that Xorg-based software is sandboxed and cannot open critical system files read-write so I can modify the device's behavior?

Not sure about XMIR,
as I have not been keen on installing it
I am installing it now to test
(Ubuntu Touch phones do not come with XMIR, as yet)
but
you can certainly modify most all the system files,
The process varies from easy to insanely difficult
depending on where the files are stored.
I have used midnight commander to cruise through the system
modifying at will,
but some of the things you might want to revise
may be part of the OTA image which can really
hose your system quickly if you continue OTA updates.
What turned me off about installing XMIR on my phone
is that it looks like it would eventually require reflashing.
One good look at what's involved is notable for saying
...can run x11 apps on ubuntu touch. But there is no offical tutorial because many bugs can’t be fixed.
Anyway,
I just started as I see the Xmir package is aptgettable,
and if I can run Claws with it I will be delirious.

Xmir installs okay,
Claws installs okay,
now for the hard part
-will get back when I get some answers here

Pyra handhelds can be pre-ordered. Pice tag is pretty high, but it is worth it imo.

* Pyra Standard Edition, 2GB RAM: 500 EUR without VAT (=595 EUR incl. VAT)
* Pyra Standard Edition, 4GB RAM: 529,41 EUR without VAT (=630 EUR incl. VAT)
* Pyra Mobile Edition, 2GB RAM: 600 EUR without VAT (=714 EUR incl. VAT)
* Pyra Mobile Edition, 4GB RAM: 626,05 EUR without VAT (=745 EUR incl. VAT)

from:

https://www.dragonbox.de/en/45-pyra

announcement:

https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/thr...o-hours.77328/

Currently more than 400 pre-orders sold. That is definitely good news, because with enough pre-orders it is possible to purchase components for the production phase. Looks like that goal is already achieved.

Also the mail app kept open sockets (imap idle).

Still not sure whether to try this...

I'm still wondering about the GDP Win as well. Now the Pyra is up for pre-order, it's something else to consider.

Well, this is great news - thanks for posting it. As far as I'm concerned, this is the answer to the question I posed at the start of this thread. I've got one or two minor gripes about the Pyra, but it's a lot closer to my ideal than I have any right to expect. It's a good upgrade from the N900 (up to 16 times as much RAM!). I'm pre-ordering right now!
