Bunanson is a happy soul! I just rekindled with my ex-flame, 770 tablet.

My previous system was 2007He on intflash and 2007He on MMC boot. With the arrival of 2008He, and concers whether it is worth to upgrade, why dont we do something halfway, so to have the best of both world.

In order to have both Os, you have to do a dual boot. You can go here for a detailed instructions how to do it, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=18751, it is mainly for N800 though. Or if you are already a veteran, and do not want to read all this, just go here, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...t=8631&page=30, thread #292. Or if you are really really scare, want somebody to take you thru, assume absolutely nothing, go here, http://examplified.net/guide/Nokia_7...ting_from_MMC/.

Ok. Our starting point: your system is completely running and smooth and no hickups, 2007He internal flash boot and 2007He MMC boot, here are the details:

Int flash: 4.2007.26-8
MMC boot: 4.2007.26-8
and Fanoush bootmenu.

End point: 2008He on int flash, 4.2007.50-6, totally new. Yes, whatever you have on intflash will all be gone. So backup.
2007He on MMC, 4.2007.26-8, your original 2007He MMCboot, nothing will be changed. It still works just the way they are, no need to back up for this procedure.
Fanoush bootmenu.

1) flash your tablet to run at 2008He. Download 2008He from here, http://http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/...er_edition.php. Turn on your tablet, menu>control panel>About product and copy the WLAN MAC address to the website and dl this file, http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/os2008_...F5_MR0_ARM.bin,. On your PC, rename the file from "...ARM.bin," to become "...ARM.bin", i.e., remove the comma at the end of the file. Otherwise, it wont work. follow this instructions, http://www.nokiausa.com/A4410232, to flash your tablet to 2008He. And of course, you have to back up anything you have, after reflash, it will be a brand new tablet.

2) Get root. Whatever you can to gain root. I use becomeroot.
menu>settings>app manager>AppMan menu>Tools>App Catalog...>New
Eko One
http://eko.one.pl/maemo
bora
user

and now go to browse installable app, you will see becomeroot and click install.

3) Add Fanoush booth menu. Go here, http://fanoush.wz.cz/maemo/#initfs, and dl initfs_flasher.tgz onto the default folder, /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/

4) Go here, http://examplified.net/guide/Nokia_7...ting_from_MMC/ and do steps 7,8,9 and viola, you now have best of both world: 2008He on intflash and 2007He MMC boot.

Post if question,

Just because you asked...................ummmmmmmmm

That is the answer!

Nay, I do have something to say.

To update some hardware made 2-3 yrs ago to be compatitble with today's technology, the Nokia Hacking team deserves a BIG THUMBS UP. Overall, it is a big forward direction, there is some nitty gritty details that needs to be iron out.

2008He makes your 'dust gathering' 770 into a N800 workalike, that opens up venues for a lot of new software. For example, maemo mapper under 2007He needs quite a lot of tweaking to make it work (not sure about the current situation), and I simply stayed with 1.4.8 because of that. However, with this 2008He, dl/install/up and running right out of the box in 2 minutes, no tweakings, GPS connect right away, so as all other features of MM. I am sure some other people will say the same thing for their favorite software. Just for MM, I think it is definitely worthwhile to keep 2008He.

There are some drawback though. Most critical drawback is the almost complete loss of audio. I am not quite sure why people say the vol is low. Low means you can still crank it up and put up with. I cranked the vol all the way up and stick my ear touching the tablet,...., there is abolutely stone quiet. Once in a blue moon, you can hear some noncomprehensible nose, though. I have not try any other media player like XMMS. I consider this as make or break to keep 2008He. honestly, if i cannot have dual boot, I would not stay with 2008He. Skype does NOT work .

Regarding the OS itself, there are quite some secondary benefits. You can exchange files with the PC, yes, share folders is there. and BT/Xterm are built in. And apps that do not depends on I/O (audio/video), are generally runs better and,to the contrary, more stable smoother. Trade off, it is a slower CPU, and programs are slower. So if a programs has a time limit, like BT connects, it gets time out just because of the slowness. Other then loss of audio and slowiness, I have yet to see one piece of software that is unstable per se.

Finally, a new OS is like a newborn baby, who knows how the baby is going to turn out. The point is, 2008He allows 770 owners to get a taste of Chinook. Thanks Nokia Hacker team, salute.

Edit: I just browse this thread, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=17057, MMapper under 2007He remains not straight forward. I still think, if one can spare an OS like a dual boot, I will keep MM on 2008He which an order of magnitude better.

Edit: please vote on the poll about the OS, thanks

Maybe it only happens to me. Hate it 2008HE on N770!
Dual boot but still can not stand the speed on the N770 maybe due to lack of RAM.

I will keep the N770 as an antique!

I would not blame you. I guess everything is relative. If you have access to N8x0, the 770 is unbearable slow and clumsy. However, if you strainted on an island and, with a monkey, a coconut tree, lots of computer magazines, and wifi, and a 770........you got the picture.

Well, I have the same luxuary problem, everyone surrounds me knows less than myself regarding the tablet. I cant dump it to anyone and I also have N800 and N810. I guess I am going to make this into a dedicated maemo mapper tablet. Really, MM is one of the few apps does not make the 770 feel slow.

I'll stick with what works then I find the 770 perfectly functional for basic internet browsing, etc.

Only things that I'd add to OS2006 to make it more functional that currently aren't available would be Skype, a proper BT client, shared folder browsing, a graphical app to switch between USB client and host modes.

OS2007HE and OS2008HE are too clunky and unstable for the N770.

Skype hacked worked in OS2007He.

I saw quite some post about instability of 2007He, I mean almost 50:50. But I myself does not experience any of those. Same thing for Chinook to Diablo on N8x0. I also experienced a complete change after reflash my N800 a 3rd time (The first one was super behavior, fast snappy, good. I made a mistake and needed to flash 2nd time, it behaved badly, unstable, slow. And I reflashed the 3rd time, everything is fine, this is on a N800. I did NOT do anything different for the 3x reflash). I have NO explanation to these witchcraft observation, suffice to say, if you really want the features 2007He, maybe reflash a 2nd time and see how it goes. I apologize if I am making recommendation that has NO basis.

just commenting the title/idea "The best of both world: 2008He on int flash and 2007He MMC boot"

Maybe best of both worlds would be both 2008he and 2007he (and even 2006) on MMC? Having it on MMC really speeds up things on 770 so having slow 2008he in slow internal flash makes it double slow.

You mean having 2 MMC clones on separate cards, right? Or you really mean having 2008He and 2007He on the same card? Sorry, if this really sound ignorant, but talking with the big guru, you may have tricks

I already have 2008He on 1G and 2007He on 2G

Oh, I just found out the cream price I paid for the RS-MMC 1 yrs ago, is now available on ebay for under $10, I may order a couple.

http://search.ebay.com/search/search...der&category0=

Another thought, kind of crazy, can one make a clone to a harddrive? I mean an ordinary PC harddrive, and boot it up like one does with the MMC? I dont see why not, as long as one can partition the harddrive ext2/ext3 and have the initfs point to the harddrive, ....... , provide that the USB harddrive is up before the initfs, I guess it is NOT then, just a thought.
