thanks DeadHorseRiding. These files also don't seem to work on the N900 maps. The "client index" (three letter country codes?) index files are ignored totally, while the "region index" (a,b,1,2) files crash ovi maps.

On N9 last version was 2.50.103 (now is 2.54.223).
But for N900 latest version of maps is 0.1.29.100.
But for N900 latest version of maps is 0.1.29.100.

And inside the catalog***.xml you will find the filename to the corresponding country.
