@XLarsonX, here is the info. You should have the file after installing mplayer, if not, just create an empty file called mplayer.conf and put it in /etc/mplayer/ folder.

I use emelfm2 to do the modification,

To boost mplayer volume
/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
added the following to the bottom of the file, mplayer.conf
softvol=yes
softvol-max=400
audio-delay=yes
audio-delay=10

To stop the annoying startup/shutdown/confirm sound
go to folder /usr/share/sounds/

start up:
rename file ui-wake_up_tune.wav to ui-wake_up_tune_no.wav
shut down:
rename file ui-shutdown.wav to ui-shutdown_no.wav
confirm: (I hate this one)
rename file ui-confirmation_note.wav to ui-confirmation_note_no.wav

No. Your key tapping sound remains unchanged. This one only takes off the "Do you really want it?" follow with a loud PING!

or anything that annoys you

No. It does NOT affect any other operations/player except those call on to these files.

To reverse it, just change it back.

Enjoy,

This needs to be stickied somewhere. If the N900 is anything like N810 when playing online streams the volume is waaaaaay to low. It's not just me either everytime I try to show an online video I end up saying sorry you cant hear it and I watch them put it up to their ear just to hear it.

How do I make this stick to Canola as well?

Also, how do I make the volume be louder by default. Every time I play a new file the volume setting resets to really low

If you made the change to mplayer.conf, it will stick.

There are quite some front ends to mplayer. I prefer kmplayer. And other than internet radio, you can internetTV too, Try WorldTV99, I think it is enjoyable. All available here
