There is no more money in the neo project.
years later...
It is over.
So much time has elapsed that all the work done to get everything working to even proto stage ,,,all the originally sourced parts are now either obsolete and cannot be gotten...or soon will be obsolete..
This unravels all the work done.
The project cannot simply be picked up where it left off...
It means that it is starting all over from scratch ...essentially.
That is one of the brick walls faced with mobile devices ...
The ageing factor is very fast...and it is a fight against that...
Hence...one cannot take half a decade or a decade to come out with a device.
The parts one initially sourced, that were plentiful at the time, that were tested and experimented with for integration ...soon become obsolete ...superseded by newer components ..
making it not difficult ...but well-nigh impossible to complete.

In short.

There_is_nothing_TO_do.

So we have lot of to do, we have to fight!
I have seen lot of nice fights on computers, how to make new MSX, Atari, Amiga-compatibles on this decade, maybe next decade is for Symbian and Meamo

Ah yes...some good battles there ...but as you said...and gave example to...
It was a "computer" battle...

Not an embedded mobile device battle...

two vastly different arenas ...

hahaha
"we have to fight!"
Such boundless unrestrained energy brave desert rain frog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBkWhkAZ9ds

Maemo can indeed see its renaissance come again... ...
Symbian tried ..but I do not know how well their community is doing these days...

But the devices?
no...their time is over...
it will be a long slow death that will take some time ...many many many years...decade upon decade for the n810 and n800...
but sooner for the 770 and n900 due to flaws ...
So no worry just yet ...
(not for me anyway ...I have enough backups of the devices to see me to my deathbed..)

That is not to say that a completely different company or endeavour won't develop and sell something similar though...
Or even try to replicate to a greater or lesser degree...the NIT device line.
that is possible..

Rather for the time being ...aim at Leste...which will keep maemo alive for a long time to come..on a variety of devices...and is relatively future proof.
There is where your exuberant energy should go....for the foreseeable future..
better to put your energy into something that is functioning now...
than a dead end.

* quasi correction...though the Symbian communities seem quite still...with no postings in the major ones since 2010, 2012, and 2014...at best...
there is a new firmware for the N8 and E7
as of last Christmas.
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/...Symbian_OS.php

I will have to dig further and see f any of the 3rd party sites are still active...annnnddd...no...couldn't find any that are currently active.
So old software still works and is accessible, and new firmware is available, but there doesn't seem to be a community to speak of where they gab ..anymore...
perhaps someone else knows of a site where current community dialogue for symbian exists...shy of reddit or blogs that is (that doesn't quite count as a "community" IMO)

There is still regular activity at the Daily Mobile Symbian Forums (nothing like their used to be, though...), and Applist is also still active for software (old and new).

Yeah, that would work. "Hey, Huawei, we know you are in deep 5h!t with Android right now, why don't you use a 10 years old OS instead that as many as maybe 500 users still know or care about?" I am sure that will go down well

Oh yeah...
Elop was bad enough....
Lets let a privacy and security conscious and dedicated corp like WahWay get their hands on maemo os's ...
That is definitely a really good idea.

China and Russia already are mucking about with Sail...
warping it for their own uses.
Great job Sailfish!
Lets give China and Russia the blueprints to spread the philosophy and methodology of "openness" ...freedom...sharing ...working together ...
I am sure they aren't twisting it to totalitarian ends.

(Don't get me wrong here...it is not an political stance I am taking here...nothing against communism, capitalism, fascism, theocracy, dictatorships, ....we have had them all...and they obviously just don't work...in the end...political machinations mean nothing...tyranny is dependent on natural resource exploitation of either a nations own resources or another's...doesn't matter the right or left leaning. Democra-...oops....haha...hrrumph...Capitalism is dependent even more so on resource...since ...what happens when the store shelves finally go empty? .....either a nation has resource to exploit and can feign a benevolent tyranny ...or...a nation must needs be more severe...militant...oppressive ...whether a theocracy or an oligarchical psuedo socialist state.
In the end...the only thing that truly works to the betterment of all..the only thing never actually tried....is a pure socialist state...transparent...run by people who gain no advantage..all for the betterment of the population.
Which is actually more akin to much older political ideologies ...where the leaders lived and had as much wealth as the poorest of their people...and so elevation of the standard of living of all was paramount...and was reflected in the visible personification of the leaders who either wore good clothes...common clothes...or to the shame of their own people ..visible to all...the clothes of the poor...
purest transparency of purpose with no room for corruption.
Devotion to duty...Duty being a devotion to the people they serve.
Shame was a better motivator than guilt...
Shame meant one could be redeemed...
Guilt based civilizations like today...are horrid...they don't work...there is never any redemption from imposed guilt...it is just there forever...torturing people until they break or just stop caring about their duty ..to themselves and all else around them.
Aeneas or Arjuna are exemplary paragons of how civilizations use of shame and duty ..elevated everyone who embraced it...
Better that than the unending torture of guilt.
Sooooo....just wanted to get that clear on my ...um...direction...)

Out of non-Android phones, I would suggest PinePhone, it is supposed to have extension pins like Jolla 1 and will run Maemo Leste besides other options.
