I bought this car because it's the car I want to be in if I am in an accident with my 1 year old son in the car. Well, the one within my budget. That's a need that trumps most of my regular deal breakers, really. I'd buy it if it had an Apple car stereo.

And what was my budget? $640/month until the car's 10th year. Cars are expensive in Norway.

**** it.

Glad you bought your car that keeps your 1 year old son safe. I did the same thing.

Guess what? I still bought my **** with bluetooth so I don't have to handle a wire whilst attending to my son.

Back to egocentric drivel in 3, 2...

Yes, I fixed that for a while with the FM transmitter - but on my new phone I only have the loudspeaker function, which doesn't work very well. Just saying that FM is a fallback technology. And the loudspeaker function is too. But it's pretty manual.

Btw, thanks about the car... I never figured I'd be one to get a Volvo When my (not very big) interest in cars started, Mercedes Benz still made good cars.

Anyway. Geek Phones. Want one, don't think anyone can make money from one.

Want a new stereo? Why, the next model does have one more feature than the last!

How do you change that?
I generally begin with an angle grinder
and finish up using a hacksaw for fiddly bits
and a precision 12000rpm hobby grinder tool to touch up any burs
or make the new holes for mount-points for the replacement stuff

I do this on every computer case I ever owned,
starting back when I abandoned ATX elephant cases
in favor of the much more transportable Matx standard.

I just finished kitting three mini-ITX cases with DCpower supplies
for the new Intel i3 and i5 stuff.
(These are now laptop- formfactor portable PC
with serious horsepower and run linux)

You just need to start - the rest is easy.

You are not locked in, but maybe your brain is.

Set your brain free - buy an angle grinder and get started.
It is terrific fun, especially when you have an audience of spectators
who cringe at the sound of the grinder spooling up
as you approach some aesthetically pleasant but obsolete junk.

Dude... I guess it doesn't show well, but the new stereo would be hanging in free air. This is a two-three inch deep center console column.

Also, that would kill the A/C, which is integrated in the same console. Yes, to make sure you can't replace the head unit, they even integrate A/C, seat warmers, window heat etc in the same console.

The only DIY project anyone has done on this, as far as I can tell, is hack a hole on top to add an "integrated" GPS above the console.
