There is a lot of discussion going on about how to grab flv files out of webpages to watch them in a decent player, but with the recent addition of HTML 5 video support to youtube and vimeo it would be nice if we could use that instead of flash. So is there any chance of support in any of the browsers for the N900? Midori seems to get a bit farther on youtube than MicroB, but seemingly doesn't support the right codecs.

The next version of Firefox will, so it should come to the N900 eventually.

Yeah, but firefox only supports the open source codecs (Theora) while youtube and vimeo(?) use the proprietary codec h.264. Even in the desktop, only chrome and safari (because apple and google payed to include the codec) support HTML5 video on youtube.
So, I don't think it's gonna come so soon...

So, you're saying this is a problem with youtube and vimeo not supporting open standards, then. That's a big surprise.

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=422540 suggests otherwise. Looks like they plan to use GStreamer and the dsp decoders on the N900.

This is pretty awesome! It means we can use the HTML5 video tag with any codec that Gstreamer supports. Great news, then. We can drop flash, finally (at least for video playing) .
