Hello,

today I wanted to use ovi maps on my N900 the first time and closed the application after some minutes, because it's useless in its current form.
Reasons:
  • Needs a permanent internet connection, but when I am on the way in foreign countries, I cannot be always online becasue of roaming costs. When I closed the internet connection it prompted periodically for a new connection, although I used offline maps.
  • Bad User Interface
  • No Voice support
  • Unable to save routes or destinations
  • Complicated to use offline maps
  • it suggested a small street, although a highway was available
  • No turn-by-turn
  • No re-routing

Does anyone know, if there is a good navigation application planned for the N900, or if Nokia plans to enhance Ovi maps, so it becomes more useful?

Thanks,
#9370

Get the Nokia Map Loader.

Update your maps and the application. My Ovi maps is MUCH better than the original version, and even has lock-to-view options and all sorts of cool things now.

Add:
  • No turn-by-turn
  • No re-routing

However, the offline loading was easy enough. I did it manually (no Nokia Map Loader).

Do you put Nokia Map Loader directly on to your N900 or do you have to do this via the PC??

I also did it manually after searching the forums, but would expect that a good navigation software comes with a GUI option for this.

With map Loader: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38872

N900 mass storage mode : http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...1&postcount=20 ..... I used this one and it worked fine.

IMHO worked pretty well this weekend when house hunting and neeeded directions from one to the next. Obviously, there are many missing features but for that purpose it was just fine and much better now after the FW update than it was. Hopefully the missing features get added with next FW updateS.

I have summed up my field experience here, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...325#post483325 and, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38405
I found it to be useful once one learned how to use it. Admittedly not very user intuitive, but again, it takes only 10 min or so to play with it, and then it becomes quite useful. Post your experience about gps locking without internet, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38405 #28, etc, or your way to use Ovi map? TIA,
bun

More details please, what is lock-to-view and how do one get to have it? I am very interested to know more about "all sorts of cool things", TIA,
