View Full Version : [Under consideration] Using N900 to Geotag pictures taken with a DSLR

While there are available multiple solutions for DSLR Geotagging, would it not be very convenient (and economical) to use the exiting equipment like the N900? This would eliminate need to carry (and purchase) a separate device.

If we had USB host mode on the N900 this would be SO easy (sigh) :(

I'm thinking that a EyeFi SD card with a simple software python server would allow the N900 to receive photos from the camera via EyeFi and geotag them (while acting as backend).

Anyone has a EyeFi card with a N900 that could test such software ?

Snags:
* Eye-Fi PRO only, the others won't do
* You'd still need a desktop PC to configure the eye-fi card
* AdHoc mode is a real power hog

I've been thinking about this as well. The easiest way would probably be to use the N900 as a GPS logger, which shouldn't be too hard to implement. Then, you can use existing software on your desktop to tag your pictures using the GPS log.

Do you have any suggestions what software would be good?

There were already a couple of GPS logger scripts for the N810, they should work even better on the N900 (as it seems its GPS actually connects :-).

Since I don't have a GPS yet, I haven't used such a software. However, I read an article (http://www.heise.de/ct/artikel/Auf-dem-GPS-Trip-291704.html) about it in the German magazine c't. It mentions Photomapper, locr GPS Photo and GeoSetter for Windows and GPSPhotoLinker for Mac OS. It doesn't mention any Linux software, though. A quick google revealed the following possible Linux programs that might do the job: GPSBabel (http://www.gpsbabel.org/), GPX2Exif (http://muellerware.org/hg/gpx2exif/) and gpsPhoto (http://www.carto.net/projects/photoTools/gpsPhoto/).

An additional problem besides the ones mentioned already is that the n900 doesn't have an SD card slot.

I think the idea is that the Eye-Fi card goes into the camera and connects via Wi-Fi to the N900.

It could be a great solution when there will bee a USB HUB on the market which you can connect over Bluetooth with a Host.

In my Opinion a great Idea. Also for other Smartphones like N97. Only to connect it with Bluetooth. Put your card reader inside and edit the content on the SD Card.

Does no one work or know a Manufacturer to solve this?

Ok, as i understand it, there is no way to create a gps log file. I tried eCoach, it would be easy to implement a export function there.

I would also love it if someone would develop an Eye-Fi solution. Apparently some Russian developer did one for Android...

How about using a MicroSD card in an SD adapter in the camera and then taking the micro card out and placing it in the N900 and then tag and Geo tag all the relevant pics? Bit of faffing but if you already have the sd micro adapter it would cost nothing :D

I would use this also. I think the best solution is a GPS logger (as suggested in the most popular solution on the brainstroming side) for the following reasons:

- No extra hardware required (that's kind of the point here, isn't it, if you're willing to buy extra hardware, why not buy a GPS tagger solution rather than some product x that will link the camera to the N900)

- You can use the GPS log data for other puproses, such as viewing the route you walked (for instance, if you were in a city abroad on a holiday) with Google Earth.

All-in-all, I think it would be interesting to have a sort of always-on (when the phone GPS is on) GPS logging solution, so that for whatever reason you could pinpoint your (phone's) location at any given time in the past. Once you have that, you can use (or create) a standalone application or a plugin for Adobe Lightroom, for example, to geotag the photos.

i'm also interested in using n900 as a geotag logger...

but whats the impact of gunning gps on the battery?

this is the kind of thing we need

Check out my iPhone app GeoLogTag. It turns your iPhone into a GPS data logger and geotags your photos too (Mac, Flickr). As a bonus the exported GPX file can be used with any popular tracking or geotagging application (Windows, Mac).
Compatible with all Point & Shoot and DSLR cameras.

App Store: http://www.itunes.com/apps/geologtag
Website: http://www.galarina.eu/GeoLogTag/Home.html

log the geotag and export as GPX file so it can be used with any geotagging app..

i found this "GPS data logger" this logs gps data into GPX format, which can then be used to map your photos... already in the app manager

Maemo Mapper does appear to have a "tracker" function that seems to work off line (not sure yet if the maps have to loaded into the cache first). The tracker saves as an XML file with time, lat & long which would be suitable for importing to programs that update the jpg etc files with GPS data. I was walking during the test with the data points one minute a part. I am not sure what happens if you are traveling faster.

Hello,

could we have GPS geotagging for the in-built camera of the N900?

Hello,

could we have GPS geotagging for the in-built camera of the N900?

It does this automatically.

The camera on N900 has automatic geotagging. You can switch GPS on or off in 'settings'and 'location'.

GPS data logger can be found here:
http://my-maemo.com/software/applications.php?name=GPS-Data-Logger&fldAuto=931&faq=32
Look for the repositories to be used on the N900

Tracking can be done by QLandkarte M on N900 and QLandkarte GT on your PC
http://www.qlandkarte.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8&Itemid=8
Q Landkarte M is in the extras-devel repo.

For N900, maep, with Openstreetmap or Google maps, can record tracks.
http://my-maemo.com/software/applications.php?name=Maep&fldAuto=1039&faq=38

Correlation of logged data and pictures:
- be sure date and time on N900 and camera are the same
- on your PC, use GPScorrelate (for linux or windows):
http://freefoote.dview.net/linux_gpscorr.html
http://www.freefoote.com/linux/corrdoc/concepts.html
http://www.freefoote.com/linux/corrdoc/gui.html

- Or on your PC use DIGIKAM for correlation, and easy viewing and editing of locations:
http://www.digikam.org/drupal/about
It is in the ubuntu-repository, and available for windows as well.

Hi ,

I can say that qlandkarte GT can open N900 geotag picture and put them automatically on map at the right position and show it like on google earth.

Import menu is under Waypoint -> import from file.

Once you have done that you can upload it back to QLandkarte M if you want with the picture

I am working on porting gpscorrelate and gpscorrelate-gui to Maemo 5. I already have a first working hildonized UI but I still need to package it. I put some screenshots (http://picasaweb.google.com/julleluukko/GpscorrelateGuiForMaemo5) on my picasa account.

gpscorrelate (command line version) and gpscorrelate-gui are now in extras-devel. The user interface could be prettier but it does its job. There is no bug tracker so report any issues directly to me or here (maybe an own thread).

I find the gps logger works great. simple. unobtrusive, "just works", minimal power drain.

I'm then able to import the .gpx into a variety of tools including lightroom (with "jeffrey's" geo-encoding plugin), tag & this is retained when publishing to flickr

Main thing to remember is time synchronization (or input of offset) between the camera and phone clocks.
