Great - publish the source, create a package, submit it to extras-devel, let developers test it, fix bugs, submit again, promote to extras-testing, let power users test it, fix bugs, (...), promote to extras when it's been tested and stable. Thanks :)

super sieht das aus!!!
*habenwill* :D

ist das ein extra programm, oder kommt das, wenn man auf das icon links oben klickt?

english:
that looks awesome!
*iwantit* :D

is that an extra program, or comes that screen by clicking on the menu icon on the left?

Publishing the source and creating the package does not need an invitation. Only uploading to extras-devel does ;)

not soo good, dpkg gave an error during the install. It then killed the hildon desktop app. And I was stuck. I couldn't close the terminal sesion anymore. rebooting now ... sweat ...

hail, all works fine :)

ough ... :)

One question, is it a hardcoded mapping of applications to 'subfolders' or is it based on the information embedded in the package as in the package manager ?

btw, Why is "attitude" stored in the Graphics subfolder ? Because it's a nice horizon ? ;) Oh well, I guess all these 'pure' accelerometer apps need to go somewhere :D

Looking and working really good ! Please share the joy an put it in the extras-devel. So if I brick my phone an need reflashing sometime in the future I have as little work to reinstate my personal N900 as possible.

Thanks again !

2 weeks ago i read the freedesktop.org manual, […]

what do you think?

I think it's great and it has to be in Extas for everybody to enjoy. I don't know why Nokia came up with such a braindead way of organizing (?) the menu when your work shows how great a freedesktop-compliant application menu can be.

By the way:
In case an application maintainer puts a line like
Categories=Graphics;
into the .desktop file installed by the package - will your program automatically read and interpret it correctly?

fpp
2010-01-03, 19:43
Excellent ! Installation went without a hitch (hildon-desktop and all), I use the French version of Maemo5 and it works with no problems (except for the mixed languages on the icons :-).

The only strange thing is that update-menu does not seem to work: it just sits there spinning in the title bar, with a black screen below, does not print anything and never ends. If I switch to another app I can't find it again, it doesn't show in the tasks lists. Is that normal ?

Oh, and also: battlegeweled is correctly placed under "Games", its cousin "Gweled" should be, too (it's not in any repo yet, but the Maemo4 .deb is installable manually).

As others have mentioned, the best way would be to use the Category from App Manager, when it becomes possible.

Thanks a lot ! menu systems have always been lacking one way or another under Maemo, and each time someone has stood up to fill the gap :-)

Btw. thank you because the package is already optified.

This is certainly a chicken-egg problem. No developer will ever put Categories in his .desktop-files if they go unused on the N900.

But if only one applications/launcher such as yours starts using them... You could start a revolution. ;)

Anyway, once you allow users to move around applications, you need a place to store the current location of the app. The .desktop file is a good place for this... So why not write to the .desktop file in case it doesn't already include a category (or in case the category needs to be changed) and then always read from the .desktop file when you have to determine where to put an application?

Adding proper category support is in line with Maemo's goal of better Mainstream Linux Alignment (http://wiki.maemo.org/Mainstream_Linux_Alignment).

For the list of proper categories (Appendix A of the Menu Spec (http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/apa.html)) and the format of .desktop files, see Desktop Entry Spec (http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/) and the Desktop Menu Spec (http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/). It's better to use this proven (and widely-supported) category system than to invent a new one, and applications ported from the Linux Desktop most likely already have a proper category entry.

Oh, and as some other people have already pointed out, please gettextize (http://www.gnu.org/software/hello/manual/gettext/gettextize-Invocation.html) your program and publish the source and ideally link the source repo to Transifex (http://www.transifex.net/), so community members from all over the world can start submitting translations for your application :) Publishing the source is really more helpful than you might think.

This is certainly a chicken-egg problem. No developer will ever put Categories in his .desktop-files if they go unused on the N900.

You could use the sections which a user has found to get the app:

for i in *.desktop; do
PKG=`dpkg -S "${i}"`
SECTION=`apt-cache show "${PKG}" | grep ^Section: | cut -d' ' -f 2
}

This is useful for the user and also aligns with #3822 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3822).

So why not write to the .desktop file in case it doesn't already include a category (or in case the category needs to be changed) and then always read from the .desktop file when you have to determine where to put an application?

Changing a third party package's files to shuffle things around isn't very polite.

Why are some apps not in the right category?? DrNokSnes for example...is not in "GAME." Where is the default calculator?? Liqflow IS NOT A GAME!! Pidgin Internet is an Instant Messenger and should be in a NEW category called "Conversations." In fact, I think "PHONE," "CONVERSATION" and "PIDGIN INTERNET" should in a SINGLE category called "CONVERSATION." Blobby Volley 2 is a game...so is LBreakout2 and MTouchGames. These should belong in Games category.

The program is nice, but it'll be EVEN nicer to be able to customize your own icons and move where ever you want in which ever category you want.

@all in this forum - is there an other developer which is interrest to help me!?

I can't pack a source package - never done it bevore - read much about it, but i think i'm too silly :-D

We have a paid maemo.org team member, our "Debmaster (http://wiki.maemo.org/Debmaster)," who is supposed to help developers with packaging issues.

Please e-mail him, jeremiah at maemo.org and see if he can help you.

If he doesn't help, please report back to me.

edit:
The thread I linked to seems to be for an OS2008 version of PyPackager.

You're not alone :-)

There is a Maemo.org "distmaster" just to help people like you (look him up on te web site). Also, there is a Python app to help create .deb packages (PyPackager I think).

PyPackager discussion thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=9617)

I haven't tried PyPackager, so I'm not sure how stable it is yet. In case it isn't, there is also a command line tool called py2deb. Documentation on how to use it is in the wiki (http://wiki.maemo.org/Py2deb)

At any rate, thanks for the heads up, I'll check out PyPackager.

You want py2deb if you want to get your package into the Extras repositories. I'm using it for my packages. But that app only works for non-compiled apps, like shell scripts or python apps. If you need to compile your app, you have to do it the "hard way"...

The only complaint I have as of yet is of the "learn&science" folder. Perhaps "Education" or "Educational" would be a better name.

Seriously though, I'm impressed. Seems the most used apps are simply launchers where as everything else is distributed in appropriate categories. Very nice, indeed.

Is it possible to make a "non Development" version? You can change this into "Tools".

Not everybody is a developer, which will lead the Development folder into "an empty folder which will stay empty for ever"...

Tools is very handy for apps like File browsers etc.

Is it also possible to place the following apps in the right place?

VGB - Games
DrNokSnes - Games
MaemoFTP - Network
Mussorgsky - Tools
emelFM2 - Tools
Mirror - Tools
NS Schedule - Tools

How about to add a new language (Dutch version)?
The things that needs translations are:

Network = Netwerk
Other = Overige
System = Systeem
lean&science = Educatie
Office = Kantoor
Tools = Gereedschappen
Graphics = Grafisch

I hope this is possible! :)

You're going to want to use that so you don't have to move all these by hand. All the apps are already categorized by their control file, so using that information would make the most sense. If it's fully automated, you don't have to deal with separate cases of developer and non because only if development tools are installed would the Development menu have something in it.

v13
2010-01-06, 14:40
I have two usability suggestions for MyMenu if possible:

Don't create empty categories
Don't create categories when there is only one application in it. Instead, just list the application in the main menu.

As for the update.sh:

The 'wget' should not be downloaded from the script. Instead put it in the Depends field in debian/control
If you're using the ping command to wait for some time, you can replace it with "sleep"
Multiple invocations of update.sh will start multiple instances of info (unless you check that in the code).

Regarding "info": If you want to have info running all the time then you may consider adding it to an init script to automatically start when system boots. However, you may be able to avoid spawning another process and instead take advantage of "dpkg file triggers". By installing a file trigger you can have the postinst script ran automatically whenever there is a file added (or removed) in /usr/share/applications:

Make the postinst script handle "triggered" as its first parameter. When it is called like that it should update the menu.
Under debian/ create a file named "triggers" and put the line "interest /usr/share/applications" (or whatever directory you'd like to monitor) in it, to cause the trigger to fire when a file is installed under that directory. You can have multiple such lines.

p.s. I haven't used MyMenu yet :)
p.s.2. Triggers work for debian. I suppose they work for maemo too. Currently I don't see any file trigger in my n900, but dpkg-trigger exists.

Agree.

Disagree.

For consistency I wouldn't want something at the top level that logically sits at the same depth as any other random app. Maybe it's just me?

The idea was not to make that app a click/tip away when it will not save space or affect the organization of the menu.

That's understandable. All i'm saying is don't waste anymore time doing things by hand that can and should be automated, like sorting additional apps by hand, because it'll all be pointless once it's automated. It's wasted effort for you. :)

If you continue to accept help from others you'll find that that kind of stuff gets added very quickly, as this "app" is a great option to have for people.

i have write a script which sort the apps on the basis of the category from the pakage (deb)

Mmm, how I love duplicated effort :-/

Anyway, as requested, my attempt is here: jaffa-menu.pl (formatted) (http://bleb.org/software/maemo/jaffa-menu.pl:source). The output, on my N900 is here:

http://bleb.org/software/maemo/jaffa-menu.output.txt

my agreement: there are too much categories - and wrong assigned

Yes, the built-in apps have largely rubbish sections. My script handles these with specific overrides, and anything you have installed which isn't in one of the pre-defined sections ends up in "other".

This means there are a maximum of 13 folders. HAM will have translations for them all, and there are also community translations (http://wiki.maemo.org/Task:Package_categories#Translations) from when the list was first decided.

With PR1.1 (http://blogs.igalia.com/vjaquez/2009/12/14/shinning-new-ham/), the Application Manager's category view is getting even better and so having the App Manager and the application menu consistent will be a big boon:

http://blogs.igalia.com/vjaquez/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Screenshot-20091214-120423-300x180.png

You can get the same effect as HAM, and allow the user to see icons that haven't yet been sorted, by having the "Other..." menu use the same <OnlyUnallocated/> trick that /etc/xdg/menus/hildon/applications.menu uses.

Finally, I had a thought on automatically rerunning the sorter when applications are installed: replace the now-defunct gtk-update-icon-cache with a wrapper which also invokes the resorting, since most packages still have this in their postinst.

There is no need to do something like that. Have a look at the trigger method I described in post #122 (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=455592&postcount=122).

At the moment, it's debug output. But there's a hashmap of section to desktop files. These should then be used to create the correct items in /etc/xdg/menus

I didn't implement that bit as a) it's already done above and b) it's only a 45 minute train journey home :-)

However, I'm happy to take it further if requested, since I'd been thinking of doing this since first playing with /etc/xdg/menus.

First go into application manager, click the menu > manage.

Add a repository

Make sure you have the Fremantle repository enabled, not the Diablo one:

Catalogue Name: Qole
Web address: http://qole.org/repository
Distribution: maemo
Components: fremantle

Then make sure you have some way of getting root access (easiest way is to install rootsh from extras)

Open up the terminal application

Type in

"sudo gainroot" without the quotation marks

Then type in

It doesn't seem to show up in Application Manager, (ironically) it probably doesn't have the right category. You will have to gain root and install it with:

apt-get install mymenu

When it asks you y/n say y. Let it install and it should be installed.

More so, I doubt it will be necessary. It seems this script creates a few desktop files and folders, so creating user-defined ones once all the groundwork gets finalized shouldn't be too much of a problem**

** Aside from the fact that I have over-simplified how this program works, I have not contributed any code and haven't got any specific instruction on any intent to release certain features. I am simply being very optimistic here.

NEWS from MyMenu:

1.) the next Update for Apps will be tomorrow evening
2.) a new Package is on the way :-)

Changelog:
* Folder will just list if there is an application for it
* Translation for more languages
* no multiple invocations of update-menu
* new icon-set

I hope i can realease it on weekend :-)

Thanks!
Will it support the auto categorize feature?
Does this mean that you will release it to the official repository (extras-devel first)? Because there shouldn't be any other repositories: http://wiki.maemo.org/Task:Reducing_number_of_external_repositories
qoles repository is already in that list.

A real thumbs up man !

Now a question: If there will be updates (newer releases), how can we follow them? My logics would tell that the update menu function does not do it :)

Would like to keep this to the latest version, if someone does manage to find some bugs in it.

I guess the following updates might be handy:

transitioncontrol.desktop to System
mediabox-mc.desktop to Multimedia
mmpc.desktop to Multimedia

horizon (horizon.desktop) is shown in the Other menu, but this app seems to be the same as attitude (which is in the graphics menu)

Also the hildon.menu file contains many 'DOS' line endings (e.g. ^M at the end).

mirakels

I forgot to mention I very much like this tool! Thanks for that.

A few remarks about the update.sh:
When I run it form the command line you wil notice the "/etc/init.d/hildon-desktop stop" and "/etc/init.d/hildon-desktop start" will give error messages and probably do nothing now. I does not seem a problem though as the menus on screen are updates when the new hildon.menu is installed.

What is the function of the "ping localhost " calls in update.sh
If you just want to wait some time you can use the 'sleep' command...
But why the wait for 10 seconds when all the work is actually already done?

mirakels
2010-01-09, 21:01
Hi again,

One other remark. The 'info' tool (to show the message on screen) should be renamed to something more specific to avoid confusion and possible process name clashes. I guess men-update-info is a proper name.

I editted/beautified the update.sh a bit to remove the ping commands (and changed the name of the info tool). A few test showed no problems...

This is why everyone needs a to install bootmenu and have an alternative rootfs on internal mmc or a microSD card. Then when such thing happens you can boot to the second partition, mount the ubifs root, and restore it to a good state.

If someone has such a setup and can upload a copy of hildon.menu and all .dekstop/.directory files that cause such a reboot loop, maybe we can analyze it and find out what the problem is.

Hardcoding apps to categories is so godawfully ugly from an architectural point of view, and can hardly scale once Ovi goes online.

what about an analysis of HAM database to determinize categories of programs ?

Exactly. The code's already written:

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=456252#post456252

and then , why not using the brand new categories icons from HAM in 2009-44.1 instead of non-related icons, cause some of actuals one seems to be not from the same icon set, and GPS one is just ugly :-( ?

Not sure, but I think the HAM icons might be a bit too large; could be worth a play, though.

TheBootroo
2010-01-11, 13:42
and in facts , why didn't you parse the .desktop files to get the category ?

cause i made from my own a menu launcher for ubuntu in Qt4 and i used this method to get categories : in each .desktop file you may have a 'Categories=' line which contains a string of this kind 'Sound&Video;Multmedia;Audio" then you just save the first part of string split(string, ";",0) ...

tom_at_lp
2010-01-11, 14:16
@TheBootroo
Did you ever look in one of the .desktop-Files in /usr/share/applications/hildon ? There is no "Categories" ( - ok; i found "13" against 65 installed programms !! ).
AND the Categories are quit not usable (look some posts back...)
Example: Categories=Application;Game;PuzzleGame;
which Folder did you take for this ? Did you create 3 Folder and put it in all them ? ....
Regards Tom

PS: you are right: "may have" - but the files dont have...

Rob1n
2010-01-11, 14:19
The categories are in a list from least precise to most, and TheBootroo suggested only taking the highest-level grouping. The lack of categorisation in most .desktop files would seem to make this rather a moot point though.

@all who had a update problem today - i am sorry for this - can you report me in a mail (maemo@3ion.at) what are you done (point for point)

how it seams on much devices the update go on without problems!?

thx for your help

I had the previous version installed from Qole's repo (that's how I originally installed it)

I updated it using the update menu sh script in System

When the update came in Qole's repo I updated it

Then the desktop started flashing, the app installed but the screen kept flashing and when I checked the applications menu only the top row was there.

Then I thought to reboot it to see if that would fix it, and it went into a reboot loop. It would try to go to the desktop, kept flashing randomly until it would reboot.

I then reflashed my firmware.

Edit: I'll email it once I'm home.

Hmm, I was unaware we had gotten to the point where we can clone and run the OS externally again. I should set that up then so if this type of thing ever happens again I won't have to reflash just to get phone functionality back. =P

This happened to me earlier today as well :)

I have a suggestion. Once the problems have been ironed out, could you make a few versions with different icon sets? Here are a few sets I would like for my device:

1. Buuf Deuce icon set (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=76340)
2. Aufkleber icon set (http://sixsixfive.deviantart.com/art/Aufkleber-112213849)
3. iComity icon set (http://www.xfce-look.org/content/show.php/iComity?content=54242)

This is what my previous phone looked like

As I said earlier I managed to freeze up my rebooting problem and then ssh into the device and attempt to remove mymenu. This fixed my rebooting problem but made my desktop unresponsive.

The only thing I can think of that is different in my device is that I symlinked the /var/lib/dpkg to /opt/var/lib/dpkg and /var/lib/atp to /opt/var/lib/atp

I dont know if installing mymenu did it but I did notice after installing mymenu that the directory /opt/var/lib now had more entries than just apt and dpkg

The reason I am thinking that this might have caused the problem is that trying to uninstall mymenu with apt-get remove mymenu gave a whole host of errors.

I did not capture these errors but I did then try reinstall mymenu and got similar errors which I can reproduce below. My current thinking is that the installation of mymenu went badly and hence killed my hildon desktop.

{edit} on the plus side I reflashed my device and lost no settings - only took about an hour to get back to where I was so I am not all that upset with mymenu anymore.

Hi manzn,

I really love you application. Thanks for it! One time it brings also mine N900 into the boot-cycle-of-death but, hey, that could happen with applications making deeper changes in the desktop configuration. :) Do you have any plans to publish it to extras-devel -> extras-testing -> extras repository to make it available for a great range of users?

Ciao jukey

Hey...is it still available? I can't install using "apt-get install mymeny".
Is there any other way?

Thanx

Is anyone actually working on the "show the categories and apps within them based off the category information in the package"?

Scratch that, I am:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2739/4268177643_45faf68bd8.jpg

Hardcoding apps to categories is so godawfully ugly from an architectural point of view, and can hardly scale once Ovi goes online.

Indeed.

I'll fully credit manzn as the inspiration and hope to get a package in extras-devel today.

is this only for the n-series theme (blue) or also for digital nature (orange)

On the flickr page I outline it further:

It will use the icons from the user's current theme
If there is an icon missing, or the current theme cannot be determined, it will use the default theme (shown above).

HTH.
