View Full Version : List your top 5 apps for Sail!
Jolla has good thing going on right here. Sail don't have too many apps yet but it's always good to share your favorite software for sail so no one missing out some solid software or solution.
Please share your top 5
Ok, I can go first:
1. Termnal - It's a terminal
2. File Browser - Looking for a file? You find it with this - clean and simple.
3. SailWave - Radio - Solid!
4. CuteSpotify - spotify only playing your lists - no extras
5. MeeCast - everywhere I go, I always take the weather with me - its simply well designed!

Funny I made a Christmas special podcast also featuring my top 10 SailfishOS Apps last year :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5s9nIbPyJPg&list=UUBUz9j-UjiVdkxHoQL4pRBA
The video is in german though you find a list of the apps in the video description.
1. Browser (I use it about 90% as a tablet for browsing, too big for a phone)
2. Email
3. Developer mode (Terminal, SSH)
4. GCC + libs, headers etc
5. Qmake + libs, headers etc

Sailreboot
Cutespotify
Jollagram
Sailreboot
Really? Do you reboot so often?
An anectodical experience: I had my phone freeze the three times recently and I thought, hey, I have Sailfishreboot (SR), let's use it! Trouble was, it froze so thoroughly that although I could move between screens and could start and close apps, I could not operate pulley menus and reboot using SR. Only the power button saved the day. So I thought, what's the point, and took SR off.
To clarify, this is not SR's fault. It's just that in the very rare situations when it might have been useful, the OS prevented me from using it.
My toplist of the GUI apps, ordered by usage;
- browser
- email
- SMS
- calendar
- notes
My toplist of the console apps cannot really be determined I guess, other than saying vi probably is something I use every day...
Sailreboot
Certainly not! (uptime now 19days, 9:53)

Here's my list, roughly ordered by usage:
- browser
- ocNews
- SMS/Chat
- SailOTP
- terminal
Hard to make a top 5, but here are some fantastic apps:
- Fahrplan
- ownKeepass
- Cargo Dock (an interesting spin on file browsing)
- QuasarMX (although this is probably cheating a bit so I'll add another entry, also a shame it isn't FOSS)
- Markat (shame it isn't FOSS, but it makes browsing eBay actually pleasant)
- MeeCast
Honourable mention to Messages (once there is better XMPP and OTR support, and whatever SMS/MMS related things people would like to see are implemented, it will be perfect).
1. voicecall
2. phonebook
3. messages
4. camera
5. settings
3. SailWave - Radio - Solid!
Sailreboot
Wow, nice to see my two apps in this thread :) thanks!

Maybe I can add something like "tap 5 times on uptime to change to button mode" to handle situations like this better.
What do you think?
Now my top 5 apps
Tweetian
SMS
Browser
Squeeze Ui
TAO Translator

Not counting Jolla's own applications, the top third party apps would be:
Tidings
File Browser
YTPlayer
Lighthouse
Screenshot
From Jolla's stock applications:
Browser
Mail
Chat (SMS/XMPP)
Phone
Camera
Android apps:
A1 TV (my cable provider's TV guide, including their choice of on-demand movies)
Tumblr
Banking app
xkcdViewer
Shazam, leading to purchases with Amazon Music and 7Digital
I find it interesting that 3 of 5 native Sailfish apps in the 3rd party section are tools for the phone itself. Only Tidings and YTPlayer interact with the world outside Jolla. OTOH, the selection of heavily used Android apps is more useful ATM.

My top 5:
1.Sailimgur - for the lulz
2. Messages
3.Poor maps/mod Rana
4.Powermenu -> Dalvik stop!
5.Warehouse
And worth of mention: Ninja
;)
My top 5:
3.Poor maps/mod Rana
;)
Finally! Thanks! :)
Maybe I can add something like "tap 5 times on uptime to change to button mode" to handle situations like this better.
What do you think?
I am not too bothered. I can run Terminal to check uptime and press the power button to reboot, so I am quite happy with one less app. Plus it would not have solved my problem anyway. (See also this TJC bug report (https://together.jolla.com/question/75475/bug-stuck-with-invisible-keyboard-11127-vaarainjarvi/), I think that was it.)
I think that choosing 5 is unfair to the others - there are certainly more than 5 great apps and the selection is also biased towards the services I use. But let me try:
Jolla apps:
Clock - the best clock app I've seen - very underrated
Browser - even though now it is not very usable due to tabs killing, I can't express how much I appreciate that they went with Gecko instead of QtWebkit
Messages - I'd still prefer one window per conversation, but since drafts are saved, it is a pleasure to use
Phone - always there when you need it
Settings - shortcuts well done, eventview integration even better
3rd party:
Tweetian
Gpodder
XBMC/KODI remote - a must have
Quickddit - feature full Reddit client
Recorder
Promising/need work:
Friends
Poor maps/Modrana - Modrana was the #1 app on N900, but with its current feature set on SailfishOS, I can't find any use for it :(
CuteSpotify - too many crashes
Situations - once all the issues are solved, it is going to be a killer app
The Integral/Derivative/Limit set from rcolistete - needs R to perfection ;)
So, I cheated and here you have 15 picks.
Or actually 15+1 - thanks, Warehouse!
... Warehouse!
Of course! How could we (all!) have forgotten Warehouse? Inexcusable!
1. voicecall
2. phonebook
3. messages
4. camera
5. settings
Tough customer for any modern smartphone :D
here is my list (5 only):

Not in any particular order, because they all do different jobs. All I care about is how well they do those jobs (though let's not lie, good looks never hurt).
- gPodder
Just does everything it needs to do, and does it well. Never had a single crash with it, the app remembers where I paused the podcast even after closing. Pretty, too.
- Feed Haven
The best RSS reader on Sailfish in my opinion. The dev is active on here, and regularly updates the app with user requests. Does its job and does it well.
- MeeCast
Who knew getting the weather could be so beautiful? The only app that I never close. Swipe left to refresh, right for a different location - barely need to open it fully - but when I do it's all set out in such a way that makes getting the information easy. Nice customisation options in the settings, too.
- YTPlayer
I don't think I'd ever watch YouTube videos on my phone if it wasn't for YTPlayer. Nice, ergonomic layout, makes getting to my subscribed channels easily. Video nearly always plays perfectly first time, some issues in the past for that, but improving for sure.
- File Browser
Genuinely don't know what I'd do without it. It does it's job without ever making a fuss, without ever screwing up. What more is there to say? It works.
Honourable mentions: Tweetian, SailGrande, Truly Yours (amazing app for downloading ambiences), Dalvik stop! (my battery thanks you) and Call Recorder.
I've not included any first party apps. If I were to do so, the browser (if only for the incredible improvements made) and settings (awesome from a usability standpoint) would be right up there.
Tidings
Jolla together app
Meecast
Cutespotify
Friends (we need an update yesterday! :D )
...
Honestly, five is too little. There are many other well-made apps: Webcat, LLS player, YTplayer, Screenshot, Quick launcher...

My native favorites
1. Email
2. ocNews
3. Calculator
4. People
5. YTPlayer
Other native apps I very much enjoy:
MeeCast
ownCloud
Notes
SysMon
Call Recorder
Messaging. I really need multiple windows, but it is still pretty good.
Poor Maps is getting there. Hopefully I can stop using Android apps soon.
I installed Android just because:
1. Waze - best navigation. period. - Don't know how, but it works GREAT even on 2G, without any offline support, in USA. It's search finds addresses way better than Nokia Here (beta). I also love the impressively reliable social reporting of Cops/Hazard, etc.
2. Whatsapp, Since I have no native choice, I wish Mitakuuluu still worked on my Jolla. Android version interface is really bad compared to Mitakuuluu, which was fun to use. Looking forward to Coderus to come up with a solution.
Community System Patches: (why everyone forgot about these?)
1. Event View Control Center. Cannot use Jolla without this patch.

Most favoured/used apps;
1. terminal
2. file browser
3. sailfish reboot
4. homescreen refresher
5. warehouse
and not necessarily in that order
Apart from Jollas own and flashlight:
- Emacs
- gpodder
- Warehouse
- local android app for VPN access (key generator)
- USB switch
Other handy android apps (until Sailfish comes)
- local app for local transport
- LINE
I am looking into different apps, but not using that many on a regular basis.
