Also, you should keep the u button pressed while plugging the phone to the computer, not while inserting the battery (i wasn't sure if your phone was connected, and this is the way to put the phone...

Video playback issues can be solved by installing more gstreamer codecs (all the avis i tried have played fine) or give it a try with mplayer, it plays everything :)
