It is another option, sure.

I gave up on the NIT (ANT? :-) for that kind of thing using a BT GPS because the apps are just not up to standards and battery life left much to be desired.

Went back to using the Garmin, it is self contained for the most part (you have to purchase maps at outrageous prices if you want better than stock) but you can route (and mine will re-route) on it and batteries will last for a whole trip without having to deal with wires all over for a charger. MANY options available built in, in the stand alones

Batteries run down, pop the cover and swap out the AAs. AAs you can find anywhere.

Getting routes from google was a bust for me as 3 out of 4 addresses I wanted a route for, google didn't have and I know those places have been there for 20 years or so now.

Stand alone GPSs at this point win hands down but I am sure that the PC offerings will eventually reach the point of being comparable. The folks doing them (God bless them all :-) do not have the stand alone manufacturers DEEP pockets to draw on.

It depends entirely on how you're using it. If you're doing outdoors stuff, the waterproof standalone wins. If you want to use it for mapping in the car, then the basic Garmin standalone doesn't cut it. I use both a Magellan mapping GPS and my N800 with a bluetooth GPS for driving, depending on my mood and where I'm going. Walking in the woods, I use my old Garmin Legend. Horses for courses.

@Sgosnell: Hey, good to hear from you again. Wanna give me a 5 stars rank? I can do it myself

N800+BT GPS+maemo mapper more or less serve my needs. However, to get it to go, takes sometime and a couple of time, I reflash my unit for other purpose and get into the car, find out I did not have even my home city map. Any I bought the thing, $89, mainly for the price is unbeatable as well as for the mrs. She open it and gave me a big smile, without even read any user manual, and used it right out of the box. I think that speak for itself. My mrs is only good to web surfing ONLY. For $89, just a little more than a 16G + 4G SD cards, I think it makes sense. Came with car mount, USB cable, car charger... and a 32 MB poi.bin

And another REASON I want to buy it, cause I have a ****** N810 GPS, which usually started to log when we arrive
