I dont have a .wav file to test with aplay but I don't know. Did you start from a fresh deblet?? some of your configurations you did while going through qwerty's may be causing a conflict..
I didn't use the init.d script that he posted and stuff like that..
Do you get any errors running:
alsamixer -c0
?
System sounds in Gnome worked when I went and manually select "ALSA" as the daemon to use and hit "test"
