I agree, it is confusing. I took it out now and hope less people will have trouble. Thanks for the comments.

Just thought i would share with everybody what i did, this was the only way i could get it to work! Once its on the memory card:

Start Xterm
sudo gainroot
mv /media/mmc1/skyhost /usr/bin
chown user:users /usr/bin/skyhost

For some reason the cp command wouldnt work for me so i used mv instead! hope this helps some people.

Hey, whatever it takes! Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately I cannot get it to work on 770/2008He and the benefit of running at 2008He is too big for me to roll back, a difficult situtation................ Bundyo, any tricks? Or any thoughts?

You have a miss? My miss made a statement:
I, Queen of this house, bestow you low lying Nokia hobbiest, either to surrender your N8x0 adult toys so that I can use it as a Nphone (Ouch!) or put the 770 back to where it was so that it works as a Nphone." I think the message is utmost clear. So I taught her how to do a MMC boot, i.e., choose MMC boot from the boot menu and she and I have been happy ever after. That is the beauty of "Best of both world" MMC dual booting, right? The 2008He GVM is awesome.

whew!! Got Skype working on my 770. I'm so stoked.
thanks to all the posters on here and other sites.
check out this site for links to the necessary updates and files(thanks ove!):
http://ovenordstrom.blogspot.com/200...g-os-2007.html
HERE IS A STEP-BY-STEP FOR ALL THE NEWBIES
(contributions from various posts and blogs)

A. Install the os2007 hacker edition:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/os2007_hacker_edition.php

A1. Make sure the battery is full.

A2. Get the Windows Nokia Update Wizard
http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/...ate_Wizard.exe (I guess you are running windows, but if you're in Linux, see http://maemo.org/community/wiki/howt...magewithlinux/ ).

A3. Run the wizard, do whatever it says, but when it offers you upgrading to some 2006 newest version, click on Browse and pick the bin file of the os2007 mentioned above. The nokia is updated.

B. Install Skype from your applications manager

C. Install Xterm:
http://maemo-hackers.org/osso-xterm.install

D. Install becomeroot:
http://www.mediafire.com/?41rrgttyrd0

E. Get the skyhost file - pasted Bundyo's post:

E1. On your PC download skype_1.7.62.48.5_armel.deb from here:
http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com.../user/s/skype/ and extract it with some decompressor (I used IZArc on windows, on linux you can use dpkg or mc or something else).

E2.click on file skype_1.7.62.48.5_armel.deb for extraction, upon viewing tree system from izarc, in folder skype_1.7...../usr/bin you will find skyhost, extract into your win desktop.

E3. Find a way to copy the file skyhost (folder usr) to your MMC card in your nokia. see below or other more complicated posts.

E4. I'm a total non-hacker so I just uploaded the skyhost folder on my PC to my gmail as an attachment. Then I downloaded the attachment from the nokia onto my MMC card

F. Start the application Xterm (becomeroot is running in the background so no need to start it)

G. Type the following (thanks sdrman):

sudo gainroot

cp -f usr/bin/skyhost /usr/bin

exit

H. And to clean up: DO NOT do this as root!!!

rm -r usr/ etc/

I. I did it! Hopefully you did too. As others have mentioned, in the echo test in skype you get an error message saying no common codec. I was able to call my own moblie phone and both hear and talk from both sides.
So Start Skyping you freaks!
Thanks to all the posters for their help and I hope the amount of mentions I gave were appropriate.

770/4.2007.26-8/2G MMC boot

Credit from Bundyo, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=12740.

1) you should be running 2007He on you 770, the last 2 hacks should be fine.

2) Install Skype-ui, Menu>Tools>App Manager>Browse Installable apps>skype-ui

3) dl skype_1.7.62.48.5_armel.deb to a win PC desktop, http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com.../user/s/skype/

4) Use izarc for extraction skyhost. http://izarc.org/download.html, dl izarc and install, this is for vista, pick your izarc version, or google it.

5) associate .deb with izarc (when install izarc, they ask you for file association), click on file skype_1.7.62.48.5_armel.deb for extraction, upon viewing tree system from izarc, in folder skype_1.7...../usr/bin you will find skyhost, extract into your win desktop.

6) copy skyhost into your mmc card: and now your skyhost is on /media/mmc1
a) take card out from 770 and copy via a cardreader
b) USB cable copy
c) BT
d) setup tightVNC, there is a file transfer option. Setup 770 as X11VNC server, just click the x11VNC after
installation, there is no parameters to set, and you will not see anything after you click, it is 'silently' ON. then on your
win PC, run tightVNC viewer (Google and install, you do need to supply the ip address of your X11VNC, something like
192.168.x.x to connect to your 770, click on the icon with two square, that is the file transfer icon)

7) copy /media/mmc1/skyhost into /usr/bin, you need to be at root then run skyhost (install becomeroot will let you gainroot)
Start Xterm
sudo gainroot
cp /media/mmc1/skyhost /usr/bin
chown user:users /usr/bin/skyhost

8) Menu>Skype, voila, start skyping....

Installed skype-ui 1.7.43.38.2.

enjoy!
Edit: Fionn caught the mistake. Corrected now, thanks Fionn.

I installed Skype based on this guidance but cannot get it working: I get the splash screen - continue - accept licence - user name and password and the err.14 (db-failure)

Some questions, from an experienced user of computers but a novice on Linux and N770:

- My OS versions is 4.2008.7-1 . Is that Ok for Skype ?

- I understand that in this device the external flash card is /media/mmc1 regardless the card name (Kingston in my case)
If I am wrong here I may not have copied the right skyhost to my device.

- When you say:
8) Menu>Skype, voila, start skyping....

Menu is the Xterm prompt or the Skype icon created soon after installing the Skype GUI via Applications Manager ?

- Sudo gainroot and chowner, I understand, are used once only. Correct ?

My N770 had the 2005 OS. I upgraded it to the latest 2006 and then to the mentioned OS2007HE.
Works pretty well, except for Skype...
One background info: My tablet will be used mostly on: email (webmail or yahoo); internet browsing and Skype. No special needs for image, youtube, music, games etc. I may even have some use but none is critical.
TIA Jorge

I am almost 100% positive that I am addressing wrongly the origin path in the xterm cp command.

The skyhost file is in the root directory of the flash card.
Also, I have another copy of it in the directory mmc1, inside media ( /media/mmc1 )

I really need to improve my knowledge of xterm

Please help!
Jorge
