Well i don't know how many of us here know bout this workaround / tweak to enable better quality front camera output display via mirror app just by launching skype ; anyways i'll share with you guys , for as such it was a accidental discovery for me.

Launch n900 skype , enter user name and password , login and video call someone or create a second skype a/c and call yourself on a pc/lappie (windows skype , thats what i tried).

Log out, launch mirror app and see the difference yourself !

Apparently i believe skype tweaks the inbuilt settings/ colour equalizer of camera , whateva is it ..it works for me

update : mirror app looses the settings after reboot , Damn !, i guess relaunching skype every time i want to use mirror app is the only solution

Please provide feedbacks as to wether the tweak works for you. Secondly can any one submit patches to make the changes permanent?

Might be something someone can use as a clue to working on improving front camera quality. But if you seriously want a mirror, just buy a screen protector which IS a mirror when screen isn't lit.
Problem solved and no battery usage.

he he i know, btw this is a defo nifty hack to make the front camera passable or atleast usable. I hope now if some one creates a patch to keep the settings intact after reboot.

I can confirm this thread, the quality is indeed better. Seems that the "Mirror" application does no tweaks at all?

I also noticed a bug which let the front cam "stuck" active when you do too much video calls and stuff.

Confirmed

No need to install skype unless you need it.

using SIP account to a linphone install on another network.

I observed the same thing happen.

My guess is this would work for other apps that use the front camera as well,
but there are probably differences from app to app.

Mini 'How To':
Code:
Install on some networked pc the application LinPhone

Set up your n900 on the same network
(if possible, not necessary if you have a local sip server like I
have)

Call your n900 (sip:yourhandle@your.net.work) and initiate a video session.

Hang up (and reboot ? - maybe, - i forget )

Voila - better mirror (useless app anyway) if that's what you want
(I only noticed because I never actually use mirror,
but accidentally started it a day or so ago and I was amazed
 at the difference )

Thanks go to tusharmax for the heads up on this tidbit.

actually the quality isn't any better, only aberrations etc are hidden (with impact for lowering the quality even more).

so it wasn't better quality you are after but less aberrations in the first place. (just as I suspected)

I use a similar trick to get the timelapse app to adjust its exposure and focus.

I run the normal camera app to get the adjustments done beforehand.
