No it ain't. Most people find it nice and stunning. You may find it ugly, but it is personal preference.
Maemo UI is one of the kind, the Desktop concept is totally different from other handphone...

How to increase the font sizes in N900
My eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be so I found the small fonts used in the N900 to be less than ideal. I searched for a way to increase them so that I can read them without wearing my reading...

X-ray is (in general) not harmful to electronics. The metal detector is what can mess up your devices. Always put your electronics in the x-ray machine when you go to the airport. :)

You could format it in a PC, or you can try using mkfs.vfat from X Terminal (you'll need rootsh installed):
sudo gainroot
mkfs.vfat /dev/mmcblk1p1
