Why?
De-integrate Opera and Flash, let them be installable, optional, packages.
De-integrate the proprietary drivers and use open source / freely available ones where possible: again provide them as kernel modules that link in to binary blobs, just like the Centrino projects. This allows for the kernel interface to be maintained and the driver to be improved even in a closed-source environment.
Take out the branding and images or limit it to what Nokia's willing to give away for free.
...is there something else I'm missing here?

The case they advertised as "Coming Soon" on Tableteer is also a mystery. I understand why the firmware is taking so long, but there is no excuse for the case....

That's because Apple lives and dies on its hype machine and Apple drones. They'll do anything to whip people up into a frenzy.
I would love to have the update now... but the truth is that Nokia never stated that June 29th would be the official day for the firmware release. They said end of H1 for Skype. I'd say if Skype gets released within the next two weeks, they've met their promise.
