I like Kandis (for Diablo) better than Egg Timer:

Countdown maximum, however, is only 16 minutes.

It seems to me a countdown app in PyGTK or PyQT would be stupid easy to do...

Course.. whether it lives up to everyones expectations . But a countdown timer is not too difficult. Has anyone put up a request for one? A detailed request.. complete with the *exact* functionality you want..

Oh yeh, it was not the Egg Timer that I tried and didn't like...it was the Countdown Desktop Widget.

I use a timer so much during my studio work that I'm not really big on these "touch" apps that use sliders and scrolly wheely things to set times. A little direct entry number pad is much quicker. Toast Timer supports multiple named timers that can be cascaded and grouped. Just the ticket for studio work and yet simple enough for even timing an egg (or toast or laundry). I'm hoping someone will grab the PalmOS code from sourceforge.net and give it a native Maemo 5 implementation.

Tell me where to make the request and I'll do it. The PalmOS code for Toast Timer is on sourceforge. That functionality would suit me!

There is no real difference between a MID and a smartphone. AFAIK, Intel plans to enter the Smartphone CPU market this year and the creation of the Moblin UI for MIDs can be seen as a first step in this direction.

This year, we will see smartphones with Intel inside and running Moblin.

The web to the rescue!

http://www.online-stopwatch.com/

You can use this in fullscreen and create a shortcut to this directly on your desktop. Not perfect, but extremely useful, with a simple but sensible interface.

Notice how easy that 'port' was? The same app runs on my desktop windows machine, my tablet N810 Maemo 4 machine, and your N900 Maemo 5 machine. The web is the future of applications.

I believe this very same property to be an advantage of the android method of app execution/bundling. You give up performance, but it's still useful for a great number of applications. However, I also believe that ultimately the web will rule them all given time.

I dont know what the "official" idea is ... but some people have gotten results going to the Application sub forum and starting a new thread labeled like "App Request: Timer" or "Software Request: Egg Timer" ... etc.

Meh.. I dislike web apps. So everytime someone wants to use a timer they have to transfer data to/from the internet.. wait for a page to load.. etc.

It's just unnecessary IMHO. But, it is a fine alternative until someone makes a *real* app that can do it. It will load faster, run faster, and won't require someone to have an "always on" internet device to use it. Some people use their N900's without SIM's or without data plans: What do they do when they need a timer somewhere they don't have wifi?

Looks like our N900 only wins on physical keyboard...
N900 wins with 32GB + microSD. And the iPhone does not have an FM transmitter as that says. It also gives the iPhone the video category using only frame rate. But it has a lower resolution video, so is arguable.

EDIT: I also think that FM radio is a win, even if Nokia doesn't actually give you the ability to use it.

Couldn't you just download and run that locally?
