Now that they have implied the protocol will be open, I have some interest in this.

That said, one of the founders (the pirate bay guy) uses or at least used N9. So it's not impossible we'd get a client even officially.

Count me out. Although Hemlis uses XMPP and GPG, they do not support federation or third party clients; everything goes through their servers, using their app. (Source: https://heml.is/)

What's with all the centralized services these days? Stop it!

The reason for now federation is
We will however charge a small fee (via an in-app purchase) to unlock certain features.
I also get totally annoyed about all these lock in networks...I need to have soon 5 friends list for every network, or?

Why can't I have just one account and simply can connect with others via federation. If I want to have security I use a plugin or a client which supports PGP encryption...so easy.
