if all else fails for your USB device connected directly, you could always grb a Cradlepoint PHS300 (3g/wifi router w/Li-Poly battery) and connect your 3G USB dongle to it then use wifi to connect...

service is as good as the towers in your area. i get around 1.2Mmbps/700kbps which works for me. ;)

FYI, here in the US if you want month-to-month EVDO service you can get it from a small and new ISP called Millenicom the EVDO is over the Sprint/Alltel EVDO network for jsut $50/mo w/o any contract....
