Just check my signature. I go for the built-in virtual keyboard clone, for sure!

yessss! Would help a lot for one hand use while driving for quick sms replies, web browsing etc

All the current portrait vkb needs is some spacing between the keys.

Just to let everyone know, if I do write this, it will be a functionally-identical copy of the current VKB libraries, specifically libhildon-im-vkbrenderer. If someone wants a new virtual keyboard with portrait support or whatever else, they will need to do it themselves based on my work

Would also be nice to have an option to choose between some different VKB layouts in general.
Somehow the pre PR 1.2 layout worked better for me.
Maliit would have all that, if you can bare with its libmeegotouch dependency: http://maliit.org

Also, a package seems to be available here:
http://maemo.org/packages/view/maliit-keyboard-quick/

Though that's only the slower, less feature-rich QML version. But seriously, I now start to think it's entirely possible to bring the N9 system VKB to the N900 – we'll accept patches!

The reason for that being that we improved the GTK+ support quite a bit:

http://taschenorakel.de/michael/2011...upport-maliit/

And if anyone feels like making it even better, here's a bug for you:

https://bugs.meego.com/show_bug.cgi?id=23986

Last time I tried, libmeegotouch was available and working on the N900, so someone who is more patient than me should have an easy time porting the N9 system VKB to Fremantle.

Yes maliit is very nice. If we could just make it work, jonwil could focus on bringing gecko 9 to microb (after his awesome work to clone browserd)

but that's only an idea, of course the man will do what he wants.

Anyhow thanks for the good work.

Hey, also: Get Maliit properly running on Fremantle, and then *maaaaayyyybee* one could get the Swype keyboard onto the N900. How cool would that be?
