@mikecomputing lithium batteries might explode if charged from below a certain threshold of charge and thus there is a protection (in the charging chip? I dunno) that refuses to charge them if they are below that threshold. I have also noticed that all of my phones that sit in drawers for long leriods of times end up with swollen batteries, so I make sure to charge them a bit once in a while.
The bupbat of the N900 (the backup battery that is responsible of keeping the time while swapping sims) can fail in the same way if the N900 is left without battery (or with a completely flat battery) for a long time. Has hallened with both my devices (the last one in fact came with dead bupbat right from the store despite the fact that I bought it new)
@pichlo I don't think that apart from the USB the N900 has higher rate of failure than other smartphones. It's just that it's a special device and many people keep it far longer than until the end of the carrier contract. It has a healthy reseller market (how many people buy N97's today?) and if any given one has a problem there is high probability the owner will come and ask this friendly community (unlike, say, N97 owners), so we witness more cases of failure.

Regarding bupbat, see link.
As for the other things you mention, you might be right, who knows. I'm curious though to see a research regarding durability of mobiles (not stupid crash tests, real life usage over time) and see how the N900 fares.
