Hariainm's answer is correct. I'd like to add to that the fact that you can also download packages from the Maemo.org package interface (http://maemo.org/packages/). It can also search and stuff.

For apps in maemo.org repositories, you can search with your PC the .deb file from this links and them transfer it to your N900 and install from File Manager or via dpkg -i:

You have to manually download the .deb file and all its dependencies... Once you have the .deb you can use dpkg -i someapp.deb in Xterm to install the app.

Try to press a screen's upper frame slightly inward with your fingers. At least in my phone the frame is a little bit loose and it causes that clicking noise when it's not properly in place.

Only extras was changed to fremantle-1.2.
Not sure about this but also afaik, -testing and -devel should stay as fremantle.
