i think this is possible. swithc off the phone, and then plug it into the laptop. that is what i do sometimes and both the drives in phone (mmc and hdd) gets mounted automatically (i am running F12)

i would say, reflash firmware.. if you have the phone restarting woes after that.. flash the emmc file as well.. it will be fine after that...

to install rootsh go to the app manager ( i think its in extras) so enable the repo/cataglog if you havent... search for rootsh
when you get it, install it from there only...
you dont need rootsh...

we have the same and use a token to generate the random numbers. I use vpnc and it works pretty well.... just the basic config worked and didnt require much of a work...
