That's my fear. And as I understand it, the driving reason behind fixed or sealed batteries is to shave micrometers off the product size. Is that correct?
Probably.

Anyone heard about fuel cell ideas recently? I always wondered if that would come to market; it seems like a great idea, but might, err... burn a hole in your pocket.

Of course, there's always graphene. Or Elerium-115 (http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Elerium-115).

From Nokia Conversations (http://conversations.nokia.com/2011/06/20/how-nokias-ip-makes-mobile-possible/):

It can lead to us developing new, market-leading products: the first GSM phone, the first GPRS phone, the first smartphone, the first cameraphone, the first mobile phone with a QWERTY keyboard, the first phone with video calling and the first – wait and see…

Edit:

And another one about solar charging (http://conversations.nokia.com/2011/06/20/here-comes-the-sun-but-how-can-we-catch-it/) build into the phone. That would be disruptive, don't you think?

We need this unit to be wildly commercially successful, ideally in the US as well as the markets in which Nokia is traditionally stronger. If that means putting up with a less-configurable UX - which can (and will) be hacked in the weeks and months following its release - then so be it.

Please remember: we are not the standard users. Standard users want something shiny which allows them to check Lil Wayne's twitter, update Facebook with fabulous photos of their way cool night out and which looks sleek and sexy next to their friends' phones and also fits neatly in the back pocket of their designer jeans.

MeeGo - if done right on the right hardware - allows us to have it both ways.

I can live without 3D graphics, if the rest if it is FOSS.

The crucial thing is power management + battery charging. If that stays closed, no deal. GPS, Wifi, etc is important also.

I realise many of you don't see as an issue. I respect that, I simply want a different distro, more close to the desktop computing.

@texrat If that screen is convex, then the center of the screen is really, really vulnerable in a fall, or even if you absent-mindedly put it screen-down on a table.

Having said that... I can't say if it's concave or convex from the render. Logic would indicate the former, unless the screen has self-healing technology in addition to haptics.

I can see that it's convex.

And if it uses Corning's gorilla glass, convex or not, it isn't going to break that easily.

EDIT: and it likely does-- http://thenokiablog.com/2010/11/30/nokia-displays-gorilla-glass/

I highly doubt a fall would break it. Nokia products are known for being sturdy, and I know first-hand that the designers and engineers take pride in that fact. I cannot see Nokia releasing a convex screen unless they had stress-tested it severely (as we did all devices when I worked there). This is a novelty that will get a great deal of attention so it will have to surprise people. ;)

jalyst

I've heard from different sources (k123 and some marketing guys at Nokia Germany) that the consumer device will be released in September.
Accordingly to Nokias new strategy "announce late, release early" I can't imagine the consumer device will be revealed tomorrow. I could be wrong, though, as some developers with access to the consumer device told me, that they would be greatly surprised if it will be released as late as September. They're counting with June/July.
Also I was told that the dev device will be announced and distributed well before the consumer device.
My bet is, that the dev device will be announced tomorrow (tech demonstration and so on) but with the clear statement that this is not the yet to be announced consumer Harmattan device. The consumer device will be announced in the beginning of September and will be available in stores one or two weeks later.

I still find it extremely hard to believe that H-M is not already rock-solid & releasable if not months ago, then def. by now.
And yet, all we get is maybe the qwerty dev. device tomorrow*, & the consumer device some time in Q3!?

Now that we're pretty sure lankuu will be announced tomm (today for me), maybe we can assume it'll be available worldwide a few weeks later?
Just like Elop originally promised as Nokia's new approach.... more apple-like etc...

*which'll be almost impossible for most people to obtain anyway, as there'll be limited availability + stupidly high prices :(

a little bit offtopic, but especially for the hwkb lovers here... ;)

http://bit.ly/menTXU

So long as I can put meego/maemo on it, I'll be a very happy camper!
Make sure that's a semi-supported option please Nokia... :D

It will be mat, so it;s nice but no so shiny :p
Personally, I'm a hardware keybard man, but I would be willing to suspend my dislike of slab phones to give this beauty a look - especially if it packs haptics.

Same, I won't totally discount the slate.....
Particularly if this revolutionary new feature, really is as revolutionary as has been hinted...
Plus I REALLY want meego to be a commercial success, so if this device is what it takes, so be it!
Of course commercial success for a meego device can't be fairly compared to the other platforms.
But if it's successful on it's own scale... Nokia will notice... Elop can't hide that, even if he wanted to.

however it is still my prerogative to be disgusted with the direction they are choosing to go. instead of trailblazing they wanna be an also-ran and follow apple. all well and good, but not for me.

its sad that i have build my own phone because no manufacturer is willing to support a discerning high end consumer.

still, its absurd that maemo has been reduced to pink shells and gimmicks, without replacing the n900, at the very least updating the device.

I have no idea why people think Nokia plans to release this phone without it being sturdy, especially with all this durable material mentioned being used...maybe that's a diamond coated curved screen and a graphene body. Who knows, but that sure as hell will be more durable than any other phone.

Actually a convex glass has a higher pressure resistance than a non-convex one. It's why they use them in diver's watches, even though they're much more expensive to produce.

On the other hand the glass on the N9 doesn't really seem to be convex to me... I think it's just raised out of the case but still flat not convex.

Short recap:

Lankku - N9, consumer device, black, pink, blue. Harmattan OS ('maemo 6', not real MeeGo).

Dali - 'N950', developer device, keyboard. Not for sale. Harmattan.

These two should be made public in a few hours.

Ilmatar - Nokia real MeeGo user interface made to look like Harmattan, apparently depends on how successful N9 gets.

All this - maybe true, maybe not...

Leak phone depth: if it's 10mm near the end and noticably convex on both sides, it's not really as thin as you'd first think.

I hope the glass is really scratch resistant, because a convex phone will spin on the glass once it falls to the ground, whereas a flat one would slide and stop.

I can feel all my reservations just fall to the ground, on this phone that lacks so many features I want, but at least will exist...

No, nothing noticable there. it just says "Nokia prototype, not for distribution blah blah" there.

Yeah, big difference between drop tests and cable tests. Nokia is great about the former, but sure did slack off on the latter with the N900...

Then again, it's my understanding that Nokia actually listened to us and went with a through-hole USB connector here. :D

In that case it must be a pretty big sticker. The picture is not usual aspect ration, suggesting it was cropped.

And the black area continues to the left.

Besides I would put the barcode near the bottom position rotated by 90 degrees.

I think there is something else there.

I am going to try to get ahold of a Dali from my Nokia contacts if it is being released as well for devs. Looks to be a fun night tonight of anticipation.

No, there is nothing else there, trust me! It's just a lof print text about it being a prototype, some code name/numbering etc. Actually, there is no barcode there, at least not on the proto I've seen (there is on another location).

For those lucky people out here on this forum that have held this device. Would you say that it feels sturdy with real good build quality, on par with the N8 or E7? Not that I ever second guess Nokia's build, but I'm just curious, since it is very apparent that they have not gone the anodized aluminum route on this one. Perhaps graphene?

You know, as much as I love the N900, I just felt that the build wasn't that great. I just want to be able to hold a device like the N8 and say "WOW, now this is a solid build."

Interesting name. Maemo versions were named after winds.llmatar was the ancient pagan finnish demi-god of winds and air. Maybe the plan before Elopcalyse was to name Nokia's Meego builds after gods of winds/weather.

i already apologized, K123 was kind enough to show me the device a few weeks ago.

however it is still my prerogative to be disgusted with the direction they are choosing to go. instead of trailblazing they wanna be an also-ran and follow apple. all well and good, but not for me.

its sad that i have build my own phone because no manufacturer is willing to support a discerning high end consumer.

still, its absurd that maemo has been reduced to pink shells and gimmicks, without replacing the n900, at the very least updating the device.

but again the fcc docs will be unlocked soon, thursday. so im gonna go back in the background. yes, im still reading the whole thread

Well, if I was in the market for a nice candy bar, I might considered it but I would be concerned that like with candy, after the sugar high, there is not much behind it. Nokia has made a major commitment to MS so I do not think this device will have much of an "ecosystem" to support it over the long haul. Nothing like Apple anyways. So while I was hoping for a kb device I could actually get work done on, that had something like easy Debian availible so I could take advantage of the great software, and much of the neat stuff developed by the maemo community I'm afraid that will not happen. Too much of a niche within a niche.
