N9/x0: share how-to/workaround/mod/app/other

The focus of this thread is gathering:
How-To's, Workarounds for issues, Mods/Tweaks, Killer Apps, & maybe more main sections?
Users can ask for help, but if you do, please share at least one new thing you've learned (not obvious).
I've started a Google doc here. By default anyone can view & comment...
We need more readers to become editors, so the main sections can have sub-sections created.
And so that new and outdated content, can be added and removed more regularly.
So please send your requests via that Google doc!
I'll probably eventually only link to the Google doc, & remove all content from this post & others.
It's just too much of a PIA trying to keep here and the Google doc 100% synched.
N.B. The Google doc will eventually be far more up-to-date....

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

My standing question is around getting files onto the phone. Is it a standard affair like it was on the N900 or do you have to use the PC Suite? Via the PC Suite, do you have access to movies, music and books?

Have you had any issues with using DRM'd eBooks from say O'Reilly or even Google Books - if not Amazon or Nook? And what about movie playback?

Can you finally play *.mkv files that are 720p or higher without incident? How does it handle media like that?

Just wondering about those kinds of things.

Okay, one last one... or two. Additional languages - do they cost? I tend to switch between EN-US and DE a lot on my phones. Also, what about start up time? Quick, short, medium? I'll come up with more. Thanks in advance.

Yes. It's pretty much the same. 3 main ways.
1. USB Mass storage via USB cable
2. SSH (SFTP) over wireless. (sshserver gets enabled when developer mode is enabled)
3. Sync using Nokia Link app via USB

Unless mine is a dud, no, you can't. I've tries soooo many 720p video files. Mostly main and high profile H264 MKV files. (but some AVI) It can't play them. Well, sound plays but the video plays at around 0.1 fps. (yes 0.1) 450p main and high profile H264 videos does play but it plays very choppy. (it skips frames) It's as if there is zero hw acceleration and it's using the CPU. I will need others to confirm to ensure my N9 is not a dud.

I however could play 450p baseline H264 profile videos without issues and 720p xvid with ac3 audio AVI also played perfectly fine.

Either mine is a dud or this is how it is. Hopefully others will report.

Additional languages does not cost money from what I can see.

Startup time is around 50 seconds. (boot up time from off state)
Nokia Maps app takes more than 20 seconds to load.
N9 could definitely benefit from overclocking or dual core CPU.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

Lock/Unlock support?

I mean not "unlock screen" double tap thingy.

What I mean is if there is some kind of locking like on Android where you unlock with pattern and Symbian with pincodes? If you leave the device for longer...

Also is there any app to "remote lock" the device on Nokiastore or in the community repo(s)?

I've never installed the PC suite. I get an offer to use mass storage when I plug it in via USB.

No, languages are free. Keyboard variants are plenty too.

Startup is pretty quick, I think.

You could probably *make* one. They're just XML files.

Switching vkb is easy, just swipe left or right on the VKB itself.

No pattern unlocking. You can set an alphanumeric code, you get the vkb to enter it with. You must use a code, actually, with some MfE providers like Google.

Wuut providers unlocking :O Do I misundestand when saying you must connect to Google/MfE server too unlock device :O

THAT I dont like....

Just wonder if this can be "replaced" by thirdparty "app" for example unlock with my NFC card or with the androids pattern unlocking UI... I guess not. Probadly closed source :-/

It was also on iOS where if you hooked up to a MS Exchange server, or any server that allowed Exchange, you had to also pick a 4 (or more) digit unlock code. This was to add some security on that type of account and I believe they "require" it as part of the sync.

I have to agree that no pattern unlock is a strange omission that I hope gets resolved by either 3rd party or continued support and development from Nokia.

No... and I have no idea how you got that impression :P Anyway: you set an alphanumeric code, and *that* is how you unlock it: by entering that code on the vkb. Some services on there will *require* you to set a lock code (and not allow you to unset it). MfE was one such example.

No. It doesn't really affect it badly although it's not as good as when it's not put on.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

dummy of the year question.

a new text message comes in, At the top status bar you can see part of it, just like android. If you click on it straight away it takes you to the message, but if you miss the period that it shows there... is there a quicker way to go to the message other than manually navigate to the messages screen, then open the message. On android, the status menu dropdown shows the message. an easier way to access an incoming message?

on the n900, you would simply go to the task switcher and it is there

how is it a problem?

btw im running 30 processes in multitasking now, and the device still handles very well. bit laggy while the processes load up but when theyve gotten past the startup phase its all good.

can push for hundred+ processes if anyone wants a video of it to see how it fares.

To me, the calendar and todo is much better than the N900.
Calendar is sleek, fast and better laid out than N900 ever was.

To do is well laid out and has an alarm reminder for the todo and you can specify the reminder time also to the exact hour and minute you want. (Same day, 1/2/3 day or 1 week before for the day selection) You can also specify which calendar for it to be added to and section for extra notes. But you can’t have more than 1 alert for each todo.

Once todo is created, it shows up in all the calendar views and there is even a check box next to the todo subject name in every view. (the week view shows the todo at the top of that view when the day it is due is selected so you can't miss it)

jalyst, I have to honestly say that you've become a one-man army in delivering information to these forums pertaining the N9. Thanks dude... it's appreciated.

Oh. Also try this 10000BC trailer which my N8 can play 100% perfectly.

Tried on N950 Beta2, unfortunately the videos played as what you described.

N8 plays 1000BC probably due to the Broadcom VideoCore processor supporting more formats.

I mean I have a problem configuring the N9 to do push email. This is part of the official specs but nobody knows how to do it. All the references online are for N8 or other phones.

@jakiman

How did you DM'ing via Twitter go with Damien?
Did he highlight anything that'd explain the N9s poor performance Vs SGSII?

Map data is stored in MyDocs (user data). You can't make a symlink there to shift the files unfortunately. But the maps app does show a list of manually-downloaded maps and lets you empty the cache and start again.

BTW, How do you restore from Backup on the N9?? (i must be blind?)

Settings, sync & backup, backups, select a backup, restore.
Backups are in .backups in USB mass storage, so you can just copy them off for safekeeping.

The N950 camera just takes the photo - doesn't notice the code at all. I see no reason for the N9 to be different.

Any notifications that you "miss" are pinned to the top of the events feed home screen, the lock screen and the sleeping screen for you to act on at a later point.

I am currently going back and forth with him via email now.
He wanted original non-resized files of the ones I've upped etc.
I will be sending him more samples from various phones I have.

One thing he mentioned is this: (this sounds informative enough for everyone hence I hope it's okay to quote his exact words)

N9 uses AMBR automatic motion blur reduction to increase gain based on subject/camera movement to increase the shutter speed to help remove the possibility of camera shake/subject movement. The downside is increased noise. However, we felt it was better to have more noise than blurred pictures. N8 doesn't use AMBR because it uses xenon where the flash freezes any movement.
So this is why N9 uses 1/30 seconds or higher for flash photos. But to get this shutter speed and maintain correct exposure in dark lighting situation requires higher ISO gain. (hence it uses high ISO value also)

I don't think my N9 is bad. My N9 takes quite decent pics when there is plenty of light and using low ISO. Anyways, I will do some more comparisons myself with the phones I have with much more controlled parameters. (including the use of a tripod for each shot)

My comparisons I did with N8 and SGS2 are all valid still. I didn't give any device any more favors than the other. All set to AUTO and just composed the shot and then pressed the shutter. There really isn't a lot to go wrong or make mistakes. =P

Anyways, I will update on my twitter or blog once I get something even more concrete.

"Push email" means you get notification of the email as soon as it arrives in your mailbox. Not sync at periodic intervals to check for email. Push email requires connection to a Nokia server which can perform this function. More info here: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-push-email.htm

hell both you and especially Damien should have credit for he acttually seems intrested to check what "could be wrong" I mean I take this as they may have some intrests to improve camera driver/jpeg compressiion etc :) Atleast it gives some hope :)

lets kick atleast SGSII in the *** ;)

Question:

At some point I have seen a setting to which folder to display when the mail application opens.
IIR correctly something like: favourite folders or inbox

I cannot find this option anywhere now. Has it been removed from the PR version of the firmware or I'm just blind?
